I'm not sure how this will turn out, but I have a vision how I want it to look. I'm starting with a 3-tier frag rack because I need to replace my old one. Old one I bought is acrylic and this one I'm going to use eggcrate.
I started tonight coating the magnets. Thanks to Marty(mfinn) gave me some pointers and some of his materials.

first stage of coating magnet with casting resin, need to cure overnight

then magnet in, cover with more casting resin

More tomorrow when I cut eggcrate to size and mount middle rack to magnets, waiting for first coat of casting resin to cure.

here's somewhat how it's going to look, I need to buy a rod to connect the 3 shelves

Looking good.
A project I can relate to.:high5:

I don't remember if I mentioned it, but I usually placed the rack/magnet/resin combo in my freezer for 20 minutes or so. It helps when you want to take the molds off.

Thanks I will do that.
I was trying to pound the magnets out off the molds with a hammer.

Please add the source of where you got the raw materials and possible the cost too... I want to learn this too... awesome project....

Sorry I have been busy with a couple house projects....painting and cleaning. Painting is half way done, and cleaning....well, house looks worst than ever (lol).
I should have some pics tonight and things I learned not to do along the way.

Very cool idea. I've done something similar with the magnets moulded into resis before and works like a charm. I like those silicone molds. Where did you find those at?

Cheers,
Alex

I got the molds from Marty(mfinn), I tried Tap Plastics and Michaels....they don't have it. I'm going to hit Joann Fabrics next.

Here are some materials:
>polyester casting resin--- $16 approx (will go a long ways), Tap Plastics or Michaels
>rare earth disc magnets 1" x 1/4"---$2.50 each (approx, a lot cheaper 100 or more), I bought the coated magnets. Marty also gave a couple magnets that are stronger than the ones I bought.
>molds---from Marty
>eggcrate---$12, 2'x4' sheet
>acrylic rods--- maybe $1 for 2', from Tap Plastics
>acrylic solvent cement 1.5 oz---$5, from Tap Plastics
>self-adhesive felt sheet 8"x11"---$1, Michaels
Marty gave me this, found this pic from the web

I finished the 3-tier frag rack. Slightly crooked....I had a brain fart
the morning I connected the shelves. For some reason I didn't cut one continuous rod to go thru eggcrate, instead I cut 2 shorter rods....still was able connect rods with solvent cement, just took some extra time.
Used solvent cement to glue rod to eggcrate. Also used cement glue to fill gap between rod and eggcrate....this was really time comsuming.

added felt....easy to slide and no scratch

coated magnets, will sit inside my overflow. remember to have your magnets negative and postive, because bottom of mold is rounded for felt and top will have a slight dip....

I still need to make 2, 2-tier racks. I'm going to use casting epoxy....I think it's easier to mix, it's 1 to 1 solutions.
This one is $12 at Michaels or Tap Plastics.

More pics of the 2-tier when I get started. Might do another 3-tier, this time I will remember to cut one continuous rod:lol:

Yeah, I checked Tap and the craft stores too. But no molds like the ones you're using. I ended up using a hard plastic round item for my mold. Looks like the silicone rubber mold would be easier to get the resis to release the mold once cured.
