500 GAL IDEA

k well afdter giving it alot of thought...the 500 gal reef will be too much for a college stundent budget...however i still want to set it up....i have been thinking and thinking of a way i could...then it hit me....i need something that wont require much lighting...or a lot of lr....OCTOPUSS!!!! now can i keep a moray eel or a shark or 2 with it.....or am i just starting to make up excusses to set this up....i want honest opinions here

When I read this on TRT the first time, I thought, Bizarre, but he can't be serious. . .

Of course, there are stranger things out there. . . As for the Shark/Octopus co-habitaion, I'd say iffy at best (but what do I know ). I'd say that a lot of it would have to do with size of the animal and how they are introduced together. . . Once they firt octopus dies I wouldn't try and introduce a new one with the established sharks, but then, that's me. . .

I would do a lot reading on the set up needed for an octopus since it really needs to be in a species only tank. They are big time escape artists so the entire tank needs to be sealed tight, also they have short life spans of only a year or two for most species. As far as a shark goes I personnally feel that even for some of the smaller species 2 -3 feet they should be in a 1000 gallon tank or more.

I believe that a lot of sharks naturally feed on octopus, so there may be a big compatibility issue here. If you decide to go this route, I would also make sure you've got ample filtration in place to be able to handle the occasional inking, as well as the copious amount of waste in the form of urea sharks are known to introduce into a system. Having said that, I agree with Scott in that a 500 would be too small for most sharks...

I've hear of an octopus (pi?) climbing out of his or her tank and emptying out all inhabitants of nearby tanks. Apparently, there were fish disappearing over a period of time and they could not figure out what was going on until they rigged a video camera and pointed it at one of the tanks. Sure enough, in the middle of the night the guy climbed out of his dwelling and crawled across the room and got right in and ate his late night snack and then went right back to where he came from. Crazy.

Hey bro I would go down that road. Octo's are a pain. You have to sela the tank alomost to keep them from exscaping (it can be done but a pain)
about keeping them together with sharks, well I would imagine that any aggresive behavior from a shark would get you an ink tank and in a closed system that may not fair well.
