Hello everybody I wanted to know if anybody could give me any tips or suggestions to improve my tank. I have a 56 gallon glass aquarium with about 60 lbs of live rock and about 40 lbs of live sand. I have an esshopps overflow box that drains my water into my sump. The water goes through a sock that came with the sump and is tranferred back to the tank using a Rio plus 2100 pump. I have a cpr backpac skimmer hooked up to the back and a aquaclear 70 power head in the tank(pumps 400 gallons per hour). I have a aquaclear quickfilter hooked up to the powerhead. I also have a rena xp2 canister filter running in my tank. In the tank I have many snails and macroalgea. 1 banded shrimp,1 chocalatechip starfish,1 royal gramma,4 three striped damsels;1 flowerplant and another type of coral. I sadly run 2- 36 watt jebo power compact. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I just got into the hobby three months ago, which means my tank is three months old.

nO I dont have bio bales in my skimmer, should I get some? the sump is not a wet dry, the water flows through the sock and then through some sponge and into the pump on its way home to the tank.

Stay away from the bio bale. Make sure you change the sock at least once a week and I would think of removing the spnge. All of these are nitrate traps. What are your water parameters? Are you haveing any issues that you need help with?

The sock came attached to the plastic top on the left side of my sump. I do clean it often. Everything is good with my water. I just bought a 175 watt MH and wondered if I needed to have a canopy to install it in, or can I just hang it. Hears a pic.

Welcome to RF!!! Nice setup and it looks like you are well on your way:D One suggestion I'd make is if you are using any filter pads, floss etc in your power and canister filters, make sure to keep them either cleaned or changed every 3 days atleast. The problem you get with leaving them too long is they trap waste and if left long enough before being removed/cleaned, it will degrade water quality which can fuel nuicance algae to grow and so forth. Other than that, looks like you have a great start. Good luck!:)

thanks krish. is the canister filter really necessary in my system, or can I do without it?

For biological filtration purposes no...It isn't needed. Your live rock will do all the bilogical filtering for you. Canisters are good though if you want to use it to run carbon, add a bit of flow and so forth, but other than that, not necessarily needed:)
