Hi Lee,

I wanted to quarantine some hardy fish as my first additions in my 450 display. I have my eye on some black ice clowns from Proaquatix. I would like to add 6 of them, but I understand you recommend only QT'ing one animal at a time (unless they are in a school or harem). Would this fit that criteria ? Since they are tank raised do you recommend freshwater dipping and treating for brookynella & cryptocaryon ? Followed by a 6-8 week quarantine ?

Thanks,

Jim

Sorry for the delayed response. I've been out of town traveling.

If they are young Anemonefishes coming from the same source, they are more likely to be 'equally' ill, if at all. However, I do recommend that all Anemonefishes, even if they look healthy, be given a treatment for Brooklynellosis. One fish in one tank is best for this, however, if the first case applies (young fish from the same source), then use two QTs. Put them all into one QT to start. After each is given its first dip treatment, put it into the second. Clean out the first QT, match the water of the second QT, set it up again and have it running, then after the second dip, put all dipped fish into it. Repeat the process until each fish has been given the treatment regime. This should work IF all of them are young and not yet matured/sexed. Don't mix a dipped fish with the undipped or those that don't have the same number of dips.

Thanks for your response Lee. I'm stocking the medicine cabinet and bought methelyne blue and aqua pro cure from fish vets. The aqua pro cure states it treats velvet, dinoflagellates, gill flukes, and fin rot. The active ingredients are acriflavine, formalin, & aminoarcidine. Would this be okay to treat for brookynella after the fresh water dip ? From my understanding formalin can be a bit rough on the fish, so I'm a bit concernened stressing the fish too much after the fresh water dip.

Here's some pics of the medicine and my QT setup. Is there an ideal flow rate through the cubes ? I'm using eheim 1260 as return dialed down and figure I'm getting 300-400 gph through the cubes.

Thanks again for your help.

dont mean to trow off topic: what is the procedure when you fresh water dip a fish....same as coral?

Some of my contemporaries claim that they believe the FW dip is more stressful than the Formalin dip. I can't speak for the other products -- I only know and use what they use in colleges on ornamental marine fishes and it's worked quite well, following the guidelines I put down. I don't deviate from what I know works when done properly.

That flow sounds like it should be okay. You can 'check it out' in a non-scientific sort of way by putting in some clean paper towel bits (sink them) and see how they move. If they settle, then the flow may be too low, or the grating/plumbing isn't positioned well. If they 'shoot through' the cubes, it's too much. :) If the chosen bits float, find something else that won't pollute yet will suspend itself in the water.
