Hello everyone,
I am setting up a 75g or 90g bowfront aga or oceanic tank with a shallow sand bed (1-2in) and I need to decide where to have the holes drilled. I'm thinking about doing something similar to jlehigh http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1848 . I like the oceans motions 8-way (www.oceansmotions.com) but I don't want to drill on the sides of the tank like jlehigh. The tank is going to up against (or close to) the wall. I'll have a close loop and an internal overflow. The stuff I will be using is:
Dolphin ampmaster 2700 (CL)
AquaC EV 180 (run by a mag 7)
Red Sea AquaZone 100
Emperor Aquatics smart UV 40w (around 315gph flow)
JBJ Arctica Titanium 1/5 hp chiller (480-1320gph flow)
Return Pump (don't know yet)
I'm hoping to get the stand built or modified to have sliding doors on the back and lined with acoustic foam on the inside. So I'm not sure how everything will fit in the stand or be connected into it yet. I was planning on have the 8-way OM on the close loop with the DP 2700 (which will not be in the stand). The problem is I'm not sure how to feed the chiller and UV. I wanted to have a low flow going thru my sump but if I plump the chiller and uv into the sump then I have to worry about the flows going thru each. Ideally it would be nice to have the chiller and UV in the close loop but I don't know about splitting the outlet from the 2700 before the 8-way. I also wanted the 2700 elevated, like jlehigh and mojo, so I would have to take the water to the ground and back to the tank for the chiller or uv. The first thing I need to figure out is what will be on the close loop and what will be on the sump return line. Then I want to figure out what holes to drill. I was also thinking about having a spray bar but was worried about having it with the sand substrate. In addition I wanted to plump a line thru the bottom left and right corners of the back of the tank and take a spraybar from the back to the front of tank very close to the sand along the wall. Or if not a spray bar how about two oceans motions revolutions in line pointing up, how cool would that be! Any suggestions at this point would be helpful, I haven't posted any plans because I haven't figured what would go on what return line yet. Thanks.

Paul

P.S. Right now I'm not worried how it all will fit into the stand because I'm probably going to build a new sump for it. So I can figure all of that out later. But the chiller will have to be outside of the stand for it to work properly. So the only things in the stand will be the sump, top-off water, uv, and skimmer.

Giving the thread a ^bump^.... I'm really bad at visualizing without a drawing. Hopefully we can get some suggestions for ya. What type of livestock (SPS, LPS, softies, a mix?) will you keep in this tank?

Best way to do it would be just to have a small seperate pump from the sumpt to the UV and chiller and then back to the sump a littel closer to the output. The UV and chiller both require low flow so not to big of a pump.

A spray bar or good low flow are not friends to sand beds, so I am not sure how to put that one together, it would kind of defeat the purpose of both the sand bed and the spray bar.

Hey,
Thanks for the replies. Actually its funny because I was just looking at both of your tanks and I was just trying to find Nikki's tank again in the thread when I noticed the replies :). The reason I was looking at your tanks is because I'm planning on having IAP make my tank. Yeah, I know acrylic is not glass but I've had a change of heart since I posted this message. I've also changed my chiller to an Aqua Logic 1/3 because I decided to go with a bigger tank. I'm going for a 48*36*24 bowfront where the bow is 6in of the 36. I'm actually designing it now, do you guys have any suggestions? What do you guys think about bows? I'm curious why more people don't get them especially since I was told that with acrylic you don't have to worry about distortion. And I was going with a 3ft depth at the middle because I wanted to do something like what Steve Weast (http://www.oregonreef.com) did. He really emphasized the depth of the tank over the length. Do you guys think that my 48*36*24 can simulate something like his tank on a smaller scale, should I have a larger width? Like Steve, I was planning on supporting my rock on a pvc structure which water will flow out of and not having sand under the rock. I might sprinkled sand around the uncovered areas but I haven't really decided on the substrate. Nikki, I would like to have all sorts of corals in the tank. And Mike, I decided to separated my return line to go into the chiller and uv and return independently to the tank. When I post the pic of the tank design I'll explain more. Thanks for the help and when I get finished with the designs I'll post them.
