So for those of you who know, what do we need to do to get a tank this size back into order?

The tanks are currently still mostly filled with water so that will all need to be emptied out. I expect we will have to remove some mechanical filtrating devices that he has and clean everything out. I know he has an extensive fuge and sump system for this tank that probably also needs cleaned.

How do we get that much salt water mixed up? Total system volume is probably around 800 gallons.

RO DI water?? Or drop the hose in it and treat the water?

Do you ever watch that tv show Tanked? How do they setup the tanks so fast and drop fish in and call it good. There must be a way? They do it and drop in some expensive fish to boot.

We need to do something like that here because many people will probably be coming across the ferry and if it can’t be done in one day it’s just going to be a problem for anyone coming over from the mainland.

you should try and take a bunch of pictures so we can see what were working with.....fuge sump main displey.....give us a good idea

Well first off I dont think we should fill it and add fish the same day. I truely believe that if the system was cleaned up and set up with cleaned rock and new sand, they would be more than greatful. I think it would be running too big of a risk to set it up and add fish.

Unless of course something like Instant Ocean BIO-Spira can be used on new tank set up and add fish immediately.

Could someone get ahold of the rock right away and start cleaning and curing it again?

I know that this guy has helped out a lot of reefers on this site, and the fact that so many are willing to jump and help him makes me understand why I love this community. What would the chance be of getting a rental tank in the back of someones truck, and filling it with natural sea water from the aquarium. I have heard of this being done before. THen it can be just a pump and some time. OF course after all is cleaned out and rinsed and placed back in.

I don't have any experience with tanks that size, but i'm more than happy to help out if you need some extra hands.

first off, forget tanked, we prolly shouldnt do anything like those morons... ;)
i agree with Ipisces....
i think its best to go and do all the clean up and set up first...
we could probably set up a garbage can or kiddie pool for fish and corals to live in for a day or two while the dust settles,
then at his leisure he could add the livestock when the system is completely ready a day or 2 later.

honestly, i think it would be logistically easier to make fresh saltwater on the spot,
with a tank that size, most folks would just use tap water and decloroinate, and use a crapton of fresh carbon.
unless he has a xl water container on premisis and can start filtering before hand...which isnt much of a suprise..
this also gives you the opportunity to use a nice grade salt like tunze/aquavitro/D&D if desired.
but, if someone wants to take on getting a XL container, filling it@ aquarium, and transporting it, great!!

also, a good bucket full of macroalgae for adding to the fuge would be good to have upon start up.

put me down to help. as i do owe this person. he is a very giving person and its time for me to give back. well i just set up a 360 gallon reef tank. i think the first thing we need to do is go over and clean everything out of the tank. pressure wash all the rock. then put all the rock into 55 gallon barrels and keep flushing it out. i have killed off my rock a few times. it does take along time to do this. as we all know. you cant rush anything in this hobby.i do have 2 spare 55 gallon barrels and a pressure washer i can bring. let me know when this is going to happen. last time i was there. i think he has a kiddie pool that he had rock in. so lets pull together and help him out. thanks chad

Does anyone have experience with "cleaning" a large amount of sand? How would we go about getting the sand/crushed coral clean and making it usable again? I am thinking something along the lines of putting it in a 32g rubbermaid trash can and just blasting it with water and stirring it untill the water runs clear? Any better ideas?

Also, after we empty the tank, how will we got about flushing all of the water and detritus out of the plumbing?

Peace,
Jesse

5 gallon buckets and as hot of water that your hands can handle and stir it around. You could probably di it the same if you stick it all in the tub ( in the rubbermaid) then use a paint mixer and a drill. But hot water kills bacteria.

Hey, haven't checked the forums in awhile....

I have a new baby at home so can't really drive or help with cleanup, but I can donate some frags to the cause once things are set up, if someone is heading there and going through seattle (once it is stabilized a bit, or before if someone close to him wants to house frags while his tank cycles.)

Anyway, pm me and we can work it out if someone wants to pick up donations
