Hey guys, gals, don't know nuthin, just a reefer wannabee, but...as far as the plenum whosiwhatsis, if you use pvc pipe anyway, what if it were bent sort of s shaped underneath the eggcrate with one end open, or holes drilled and that was connected to an outlet with a valve so you could open or close it. Then you could just open it to syphon off the bad stuff. If this were done during water changes you could just throw it out and not worry about dealing with it at all.
