PSAS acrylic demo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Matt,
Duane here, Last spring someone created a thread asking PSAS members what kind of meetings they would be most interested in. An acrylic workshop was one of the more popular subjects.
During our first Board of directors meeting, we decided that the PSAS would like to have such meeting in November or possibly October. We decided that asking Jason of CFI might be pushing our luck, so I volunteered you (with my help) to host the meeting. Of course, you have to agree. I was very impressed with the quality of work that Ive seen on the site here an felt that you were most qualified just shy of Jason. We felt htat he wouldnt want to give up any trade secrets and definately would want paid dearly for his time
What I came up with for a simple build is to let the members build (glue together) top down view boxes. It would be as easy as precutting all of the pieces for everyone ( IM guessing about 25 boxes worth) and then cutting one out during the meeting. IMO gluing the joints would be the most helpful to most reefers. If you would like I can precut everything and have it ready.

I guess what we need to know now is

1. Are you willing to do it?

If so...

2. Where would we hold the meeting?
3. What month would work best?
4. What simple details am I forgetting?

Let me know what you think.
If you want to talk in person, give me a call on my cell 425-299-1948

Were on then....:D

where are we going to get the acrylic?

I think this will be fun.
call me tomorrow we can discuss some details!

Matt

Im glad your on board. I think it will be fun for sure. I am also glad that you are willing to have it at your house because we just had a meeting in Bellevue followed up with a meeting (next weekend) at my house in Lynnwood. A south end meeting is definately due. If you want to incorporate a keyhole flange segment into the meeting that would be great. The more we can teach the better. I simply didnt want to put alot of pressure on you that you would say "No way no how". We want this to be fun for both you and the members. I know a little bit and have a few tools but didnt feel like I should be teaching everyone in Seattle how to make leaky Ca. reactors. Your quality far surpasses anything Ive ever done. As far as materials, I was telling the board members that I could rummage through TAP plastics salvage bin. but the more I think about it I feel it would be easier to just buy enough 1/8" material to do the job for just as cheap. A 2'x4' sheet of 1/8" is $32. We can likely buy a couple small pieces of 1/4" for the keyhole segment as well. Ill talk to the BODs and see what they have to say for a budget and we'll work form there.
The reason I suggested viewboxes is that they are simple and we can get all of the members to do the work to get hands on experience with some glue and acrylic. I would want to precut everything. I dont know about you, but I sure wouldn't invite a bunch of strangers over to work on my table saw or grab my router.
I also think that October would be pushing our readiness to pull this off (at least without my wife being angry). It will likely require at least on visit down to your house and maybe a few hours of working together on a Saturday to get things going. How does your family like the smell of fresh cut acrylic in the garage? My family hates it.

Well thats enough chatting for tonight. Send me another PM with your phone number so I can call you.

Talk to you later. Duane

So, what kind of budget do we want to set for this? Also, should we set up a raffle for this as well?

IMO, I think we should be able to spend what is needed for material. A raffle would be nice, but a lot of work to go after donations.

I think we should ask our sponsors for donation. We've their email addresses so it's pretty easy to ask.

Duane, looks like we need to keep it in November since we've speaker for October

Good, after talking with Matt on the phone the other day, we both agreed October would be really pushing the time with everything.
On another note.
Matt Really feels that we should use 1/4" material for ease of use. He has a local supplier near him that he sometimes gets product at wholesale prices. He has a couple friends that work there. :D We are planning on meeting in early/mid October to have our own personal workshop and get things started and near ready for this.

I got the acrylic for the demo, my cost was $100 even so when the time comes that is how much to reimburse me for my cost. let me know whats up so we can keep this going....
He's ready to go now. A day at his house in puyallup cutting stuff up, a bit of glue, and we have a workshop ready to go. :)

Sounds great. My husband built me one of those top down viewers once it was cool, but he used silicone as an adhesive so it did not last long. I just kind of wish this was sooner as I am thinking about trying to make some kind of guard for my DC8 out of acrylic to block it from water splashes. I am having to mount it closer to the sump and tank than I would like, so that my heater cords reach.

Duane,
I am sorry. Adam Blundell asked for meeting to be postponed to possibly March of 2009. So we are back at square one. This is common for guest speakers plans to change. I am sorry.
Would Matt be willing to still do Presentation as you planned before?

Duane,
if youy hae not asked Matt yet for November, please wait. I have another speaker lined up for November courtesy of Randy. I will see what we can do over here.

If you've already asked Matt, then do not worry. I will see if Jake can make it January or Februray.

Let me know so I can tell Randy one way or another.

I have Jake Adams that is an expert on Flow and coral growth. He can come on November 15th. He was a hit the last time he came, and its a topic that people would love. let me know if you would like me to book him.

Duane, I sent you message on Acrylic workshop thread about Matt. Let me know with a PM
