in the corner of my tank. the black seal is turned orange and my hermits are pickin at it... hmmmmm IS IT GONNA BLOW ????? I dont see any water leakage yet. pics attached.

Yikes! I had that happen in my old setup and had to relocate the hermits everytime I caught them doing it. I noticed that they were really after the algae that settled on the silicone so I just used my finger to rub it off and it seemed to help. Other than that, they use to climb it for some reason. I guess it is easier to get a grip on the silicone rather that the glass, however they never got through the silicone to cause any leaks and I never really noticed that they actually picked through any of the silicone. HTH...Sorry to hear about it. I know it was a pain for me. Too bad you can't put a leash on them (LOL)

If you have corraline growing in a place that should be completely sealed, because it is the silicone holding the two pieces of glass together, I would start to worry.

And afterall, it is time for a larger tank anyway, isn't it?

Don...It's always time for a bigger tank IMO(LOL) I don't think 5,000 gals would be enough for me(LOL)

Diablo, how many hermits do you have and do you rely on them for anything special or do you just have them for looks (as I know most people use them to eat nuicance algae)? If they are only there for looks and nothing more, I'd remove them for now if it worries you that much. I wouldn't want to risk coming home and meeting all of your water on the floor. If they are used to eat up some hair algae etc, then maybe you could replace the hermits with some snails which I'm sure won't get through the silicone. Just a thought...

I really doubt it was the hermits who started that. I think they are just taking advantage of it.

Hard telling what started it ... fingerprint on the glass before assemble that prevented optimal adhesion by the silicone, too-agressive scraping with a metal scraper trying to remove corraline, ???
But probably not picking from a hermit crab.

Some tank manufacturers have had problems with their silicone adhering, like the black silicone that Perfecto uses. They've now fixed the problem to my knowledge, but your tank could have been part of those lots. I agree with everyone else, it's likely the hermits are just picking at whatever algae is growing in the area.

Hard to tell from the photos, but the silicone should be holding in the seam where the two panels abutt each other. Not the joint (corner) where they come together.

It looks like the silicone in question is just the excess on the panel, and not within the joint - I would not worry about it.
