I have a couple algae types I'd like to get an ID on if somebody can.

The first is a red bubble algae that's been spreading like valonia. It grows red initially in small clumps, but appears to turn whitish as it matures. It contains a gel-like substance inside, rather than watery like valonia.

It seems to be receding now that I fixed some water parameter issues, but its still pretty annoying and choked out a lot of my zoanthids.

The second is a plating algae. I can't tell if its calcerous <sp?> or not. Its not growing very quickly and is actually quite nice looking, but its taking up space on my rock where coral doesn't appear to be able to grow. I can break it off, but its encrusting under where the plates are, so its difficult to actually remove.

I thought it might be Botryocladia at first, but there's no stem at all, its growing in clusters directly on the rock/glass and never up. The actual bubble certainly looks correct though.

You're definitely right on the Mesophyllum though, thanks. Gives me something to research.

OK, but there are a number of species of Botryoclaudia sp Some grow on "stalks, some grow in short clumps or clusters of just a few and some are solitary bubbles.

Ah, you're right. That's the one.

Thanks.

Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of it. =)
