I have a new type of algae showing up in my tank. I am not sure what it is, but it shows up near the end of my photo period and is gone by morning. It is all over the rocks and sand. It is orange in color and flat and rectangular. Anyone have any ideas?

dood i don't wanna scare you, but i think they are flatworms (red planaria)
they love light, they hate flow.
how old are your lights?
how often do you do water changes?
its not hard to get rid of them, if they are flatworms :)

krish stop taking childrens' vicks :D .

Well dood, since i dealth with flatworms for over year and a half and by the color, i'd say flatworms and more by your description :), they are a very anoying pest that you gotta control otherwise they can take over your whole tank.
People use different ways to take care of these things

1- flatworm exit
2- nudibranch (which i wouldn't recomend)
3- siphonyn them and using powerheads (if you got some, helps alot)
4- six line wrass

like i said, they can be a real pain in the neck if you let them.

Its planaria man. Flatworms. Infested. I killed all mine with flatworm exit.
I lost my Naso tang and pygmy angel. My blue face went blind in one eye. He has recovered just fine. Be glad to tell you what I learned treating my tank and what I would do different.

I would say the same as above...flatworms. Good ID Gab & Steve. Jamie, see if you can siphon a few out with a turkey baster, and put them in a clear container (you might have to use a white background) to get a better pic.

i'm sorry dood that you have them trust me, i almost give up on the hobby because of these things.
ok after many advices from everyone in here and thanks so much to everyone that gave me ideas :) this is what i did

instead of using the whole vacuum grabel, i only used its tuve for changing the water since it's flexible and tiny so it can fit in little places and i'd rub the tuve on the rocks and a little bit on the sand (this is really good trust me ;), i'd end up with hundreds of them ) i also used the powerhead to encrust (i believe that's what you call when the powerhead is facing the rocks)so the flatworms would go swimming and i'd put a litte filter floss on my sump.
I added 1 six line wrass, i don't know if he helped me at all but i give him a credit hehe :D .
i also changed a little bit my lighting time instead of 8 hour i did 6 hours (just don't do it quick do it slowly so you don't have problems with your corals and fishes)

One time i tried a velvet slug (they only eat flatworms) and trust me the poor thing just lasted me i believe 2 days max until my anemone decided to kill it :( . i waited for a year (they are hard to find) for this slug and in a day or two he was gone.
well my dood Steve just told you what happened to him and i was gonna try using flatworm exit but i guess i just wanted to try different things before using it, so i can't tell you anything about it, i believe Mungus used it ( you should look for his threads).
ohh yeah and the last one i remember someone in here told me too, is just make some water and add a little bit of flatworm exit in there and just deep your rocks and run some carbon in there too, as far as i can remember :) .
I'm sure Linkki (Nikki) can give you some good threads too :D

ohh there she is :D

ohhh just so i make a tiny little bit more of sence :D, ok you put one side of the tuve in the tank and you suck a little bit from the other side and quick put it in your bucket (or wherever you dump your old water) so you get your water go through it.
ohhh those tuves do wonders :D

LOL!! Krish i'm trying to keep this pg ok so don't make me sweat  .
Otherwise Chuck for sure is gonna ground us dood.
you brough a good point, there's a lot of tubes( i give up dood i dont know how to spell it) in this world, this one is transparent and you can suck on it just don't do it hard or you'll taste something nasty   .

happy krish !!

Yeah...I love messing with you(LOL) Tuve...tube...hose... whatever. All do the same thing(LOL) Sorry Jamie...I'll go punish myself again...

I found this link on Melev's reef site. I think this is what I will do first. Once I get alot of them out, I will try the Flatworm Exit.

Good luck Jamie...Marc at Melev's reef is a pretty smart guy. I hope you get sorted out soon!

Gabby...I edited that so you are the only one who said it.(LOL) Gabby's gonna get in trouble, Gabby's gonna get in trouble(LOL). Sorry Jamie...I'll go punish myself again...

well dood, just so you know and from what i have read is that people do a second dose.
and make sure you run carbon in there and i believe sometimes people dose a little bit more of what the bottle says to make sure they get rid of them :) .

LOL!! and i thought we were friends :D

Ok, just got back from Blue Sierra. Getting there and back from downtown Seattle on a lunch break is not a reccommended experience. No time to look at all the neat stuff.

I picked up some tubing and a couple micron bags in order to make the tool on the Melev's reef link above. Gonna be a fun night tonight :). They were out of the Flatworm Exit, so I will have to wait on that.

I also picked up another Seio 820 to boost the flow in my tank. I am going to have to play around with that to see where it will work the best. I have some dead spots in the back and on the left side of my tank. I am going to try to get the water moving good enough so that these areas don't accumulate any waste anymore.
