Have a 90g 48Lx24H and need some lights for LR and a Quadri Anem down the road, rumor has it PC lights will be "okay" and my budget likes them too, so im stuck on PC lights, i was curious is the 48" ODYSSEA (65wx4) lights on Ebay for $100 shipped is somthin that is "good enough" for my design and worth the money, its only a starter light set.

My other question is it comes with 2x65w 12k bulbs and 2x65w Actinic 03, are these okay bulbs and if i wanted a 10k Daylight could i use that with that fixture?

Thanks for the help in Advance, love the site!

Do you have a link ? $100 for a 4x65w unit sounds very cheap !
What are you planning to have is this a FO tank or are you planning on a reef ? If it's going to be a reef is it going to be a softies tank or are you planning on having clams SPS or anemones ?
The type of lighting you need really depends on what your planning to keep. With a tank 24" Tall and if your planning a reef I would recommend you do it right the first time and get Metal Halides as the PC's will have trouble penetrating the water at that depth and you'll just have to upgrade later. I have read a number of posts in which the people did not really like the longer PC's. Generally problems with fragile pin connectors on the end. If you are going flourescent, you may be much happier with T-5's

those lights are supposed to be poor construction. The coralife are better and will last longer.

For a VERY inexpensive "startup" lighting system... 4X65watts... what you have found on E-Bay there looks like a good price. Yes, they aren't the highest quality, but if you are looking to get started for the least amount of money, could be a choice for you.

I'm afraid that the 4X65Watt PC lights... "may" keep this Quadri alive, but it won't be "Thriving" under them.

Once again, if your idea here is a "Starter"... its probably do-able. If you don't plan to upgrade lights BEFORE getting the Quadri... probably not a good idea to even look at those PC lights. Just my oppinion... and we all know what they say about those "stanky" thangs.

Lights are one of those things that you get what you pay for. You pay for quality in the ballast, wiring and fixtures. The cheap ones use crap wire, crap connectors, crap ballasts and crap bulbs. If you want crap, and don't mind throwing them in the trash then yes. However it is worth saving your money untill you can afford to spend about 200 and get them from somewhere reputable. I personally would rather buy a workhorse 7 and wire it up myself, and would feel a lot better about not burning down the house then buying a cheap fixture. Also t-5 seems to be quite a bit better then pc. I have always liked vho, but it costs about 250 or so to get into a good 4 bulb setup. I would just save my money, lighting is one of the things that you don't want to skimp on. If you do some research around the boards there is a lot of info on how to wire up a workhorse, and that will save you money and you won't be sorry either. They can overdrive NO, run vho, pc and t5. Sorry that I havn't been too positive in your threads, I don't mean anything agains you:D I just want to see you get started right and not waiste all the money that I wasted.

Thanks for all the help guys! Dont worry BigT you aint hurtin my feelings, your savin me money! I have a list of stuff to get goin, and i found some more money to throu into the SW "jar" so when i get back from vacation next month, ill be buyin the stuff, the lights are the last little part of the project, im still confused on all the possibilities. I would like to get somthing that i can use for a few years and then get the big 250wMH down the road, im leanin towards T-5's now, that is what everyone says to get, can someone rec. a fixture so i can look at it and compare prices? Thanks for all the help guys!

Ok now all you need to do is score a dual pfo 250w setup. If you keep your eyes open you can get them for around 200 bux. They come up on the boards all the time. As far as recommendations I would look at sunlight supply for t-5, they are a good company. I couldn't tell you where to get them, try our sponser list and google.

Never heard of them but for 150$ each, those electronic MH set-ups look nice, nice enough I may want one for myself. I agree, go for it, these retro kits are just as easy to install, Well ok almost as easy.

Link from ebay!!!!!!

Jiddy,

Please take what I'm about to say very seriously!!!!!!!! I bought a light from that supplier you are looking at for the T5.

He talked me into purchasing the MH/VHO/Moon light setup off site from ebay, "becuase I wouldn't have to pay his fee's for ebay" The unit was supposed to ship within 1 week.

3 Weeks later I finally was able to get in contact with him and he said they forgot to build it. Another 2 weeks and a promise to ship fedex priority 1, still no light. About a month later it finally arrived via ..... can't remember name of new company thats like fedex.

the end of the lighting fixture was broken into about 5 peices and I had to repair a bunch of wiring that had pulled out as well.

I have attempted to contact him for over 2 months now and get problem taken care of to no avail. I finally gave up.....cut my losses and count it towards lessons learned!!!!!!

One more thing ...... the moon lights are already dead and no longer working.

You might say I'm just an angry customer but I gave him more than ample oportunity to correct problem. And yes I have coppies of all emails sent back and forth.

Needless to say but purchasing other than through ebay I have no way to lodge complaint but I definately wouldn't want to see someone else go through what I did.

ESPECIALLY AFTER PAYING $850 FOR THE FIXTURE
BUYER BEWARE

Duane
