What about going from old UG system to live sand?
I have thought about converting to LS bed since I first heard about Berlin systems a long time ago. Is there anyway to do this without tearing everything out and starting over? Can it be done gradually?
I have a 40gal tank with 3" of crushed coral (size 2-5mm) over a grate with one uplift tube and reverse flow powerhead. Can I mix sand and gravel? Can I keep the grate as a plenum? In the meantime, can I reduce or eventually eliminate the powerhead flow through the UG tube?
There are dozens of detail questions, but first I need to know if it can be done at all.
