I bought this coral a few mths back and it wouldn't open up for 2 weeks, i thought it was dying so gave it to a mate and it started thriving after 2 days:confused:. He gave it back to me yesterday and my moorish got stuck into it as soon as it hit the water:mad: (obviously why it didnt open for the first 2 weeks i had it)
Have blocked it from the idol and it is now thriving less than 24hrs later.

Q1- what is this coral?
Q2- if i leave it blocked from the idol like this will he get used to it and leave it alone?
Q3- why didnt the idol touch one of these same corals i had ages ago?

Turbinaria is my guess, i've got one too and several of my fish seem to pick on that particular one, don't know if it's because it is the best at catching mysis or what... Of course mine is much smaller.. like 8 polyps.

Turbinaria is one of those tricky corals with a wide variety of names. Pagoda, cup coral, vase coral, etc, etc,. It can either be SPS or LPS. In every picture I could find and every specimin I've personally seen, the body is one solid place hence the names "cup" and "vase". In the pic above, there are individual branches that I've seen in larger duncanops colonies.

I have to go with duncans.
