Do I really need this? Is this necessary? What is the point of this? Someone explain to me the benefits of this. I got a 40 gal, with 2 marineland power filters ( 200 and 150 ), also I got a Bak Pak CPR hang-on, and a powerhead for waterflow.

more effective: a overflow of some sort, built in or hob overflow and use a 10 or large tank and grow cheato or macros in it with good light, and perhaps sand if you're into that, a dsb. this is known as a fuge (or refugium) and use a pump to get water back to your main tank
It will decrease phosphates and nitrates through algae growth in the fuge.
It adds water volume making the tank more stable
It gives a place for things like pods to grow and multiply without or with less predators.
It also gives a place for equipment that you may not want seen and more flow, the hob version just a smaller fuge that require a less expensive pump and may be convienant for your situation, but the more volume you have the more room for cheato to grow, more nutrient export,
think melev's reef has a article on this
but no plenty of people run good tanks without fuges, but they do help

yea, marineteng covered it all. it's not nessesary, but it helps just like any refugium. i personally have a cpr large hob on the back of my 20l and it's awesome. i think 2 powerfilters, skimmer, and a refugium is a little bit over the top especially when it comes to the appearance of your equipment. if you got sufficent enough live rock and if you really really want one i would personally ditch the power filters for just a skimmer and refugium combo.

I decided not to get one. Hate to spend more money. My tank is doing great. At the moment I"m dealing with car problems. So...all my cash is going towards fixing my car. I just want to see others opinions if it was necessary to get one cause it looks cool.
