I called the office and asked if it was ok to keep a 75gal tank in my upstairs apt and they said it was ok and that all the apts were waterbed safe. But im still a little worried b/c ive read that waterbeds spread their weight out and are equivalent to a fridge. I know i should put it perpendicular to the joist. i dont know how to find out which way they go, maybe a stud finder? Im just a bit nervous about doing it.....any thoughts

I used to keep a 55 and a 70 within eight feet of each other in my 3rd story apt. If you are in a long skinny building you can count on the joist being from front to back the short way.

its not really skinny/long, its more of squar shape....so im just not sure which way the joist are running. are there any other people who had good luck with similar tanks in upstair apts?

Put it where your want it and get renter insurance.

 I love it!

I would stick it on a load-bearing wall. Putting it in the middle of a large span might be a problem if the building is old. But then again 750lbs is not too bad.

any ideas on how to find out which way the joist are running?

Not really, Even a stud finder will have a problem reading through the carpet and subfloor. If you are positive that the floorplan above you is identical to yours you could check the ceiling with one. Keep in mind that the joists could vary from room to room.

i had a 100 with a 55 sump in a 3rd floor apt. but do get renters ins. it is very cheap and well worth it if you flood

thats a good thought, thanks trido...

Loohunter, stories like that make me feel more confident :D

if you really must know i would consult the builder, or who ever has the plans of the building.

guessing on something you didnt build yourself, OR better yet

assumeing that the builder knew what the ---- he was doing, could set you up for a nasty fall.... if ya know what i mean..

how old is the building is the real question..

How old is the apt. alot of newer apts have concrete flowers
I was going to say that but can only speak of the west coast. If it does have a layer of light weight concrete it is usually around two inches and will distribute the weight VERY well.
