ATO Help!

I have a 30g tub I fill with RO water that usually last a week. The problem I have is when it is almost full, the small MJ pump will come on & when the ATO shuts it off the water does not siphon break & it keeps filling with water. This usually isn't a problem once the water level in the tub goes down, was wondering if someone has ideas, I was thinking of maybe somehow adding a small tube from the top to the inlet of the pump to allow air in it but that would squirt water out of it when running, this should be an easy fix but I'm drawing a blank!:lol:

Your only need a small 1/8" vacuum break. Use air line tubing and have any water that wants to quirt out the break return back to the holding tank above the water level. You will be suprised how little will come back, there really isnt any back pressure with a pump that small.

I agree with Don. I installed an airline "T", and just use that as my siphon break. Yes, when the pump is on water does come out of that "T", but not with any huge pressure, and it keeps any siphoning from happening as soon as the motor stops.

Ok next question, how do you adapt from 1/2" tubing to the 1/8? Is there some sort of adapters made for this?

One came with your maxijet. Use that little venturi, if its not close to the pump there wont be enough velocity to suck air.

I happened to have a box of old RIO piece parts... and in that box I found my 1/2" connector, that had a "T" for an airline (possiblly some idea RIO had to use as an injector for one of their powerheads???). Thats what I used.

I'll have to check the MJ is a Mini Jet, I know the inlet is part of the housing but don't remember If the outlet had the parts like the regular MJ's, I'm actually going home now so I'll check to see what I have available.

It is also possible to just about any "connector" for your 1/2" tubing... and in that connector you drill a small (1/8") hole, and let that be your syphon break.

If not you can just drill a hole right above the water line and shove in a piece of air line tube.
It may leak a little but not big deal.

Also if you want to be fancy. Go to the auto parts store. There is a product line called "Help" all stores carry it since its made by Dorman. They will have a small vacuum "t" with 1/2 on one part and 1/8 on the other. Shouldnt cost more than a buck or two.

Well went home for lunch to check it out, I have all the MJ parts but for the Mini 606 it has a barbed fitting for the outlet. I tried to use one of the regular MJ parts with the 1/8" adapter but can't get the tubing around it, so I know exactly where that "Help" section is at, I'll go scout it out later today & see if I can nip this issue.


While I'm at it might as well ask for ideas on this coming problem!
I need to decide what I'm going to do with my 30g tub & getting it filled. Each week I have to disconnect everything & roll it down the hall & stick in the RO/Di water overnight to fill it again, not a big issue butt I plan on putting the chiller right in that space & the tub above it. I was planning on making a hollow stand to slide the chiller in but have the front & back open for plenty of air circulation & just set the tub on top of that. That will work but the problem with that is the tub will be 12" off the floor. So I can only think the way to fill the tub up is to get another fill it, roll it down the hall & then pump it into the other tub, that idea kinda sucks but other than trying to run the ro unit way over there which would be a major pain. So new ideas on that would also help while I'm still in the planning stage for all that. I'm running out of space & don't want to run the chiller inside the stand, I think that is too much heat to deal with.

Unless your putting chemicals or kalk in the container I'd forgo it all together. Ive never seen any reason for this other than the fact that some cant run the rodi to the tank. I'd go through the effort to get the rodi line to the tank either by going into the attic or under the house. Other than that your going to have to use a second container or just run a 25ft poly line to the container over night and disconnect it when you get up. The effor to run the rodi to the sump is well worth the time and is not as hard as it may sound.

Yep I think I'll have to run it through the walls into the tub, eventually I'll probably run kalk in there maybe. Thanks for the input, I'll have to get some mouse proof tubing or something that I can easily fish through the wall.

Do you have a crawl space under the house. Alot of times its easier than the attic. Then you just need to punch a hole in the floor at both ends and not have to fish down a wall. Run the poly line through 1/2" pvc and its mouse proof.

My house on on a slab, so attic is the only option, don't think I can run 1/2" pvc through the wall. Not that I have lots of mice but in winter I do get them at times, I can hear them LOL! Those darn mice eat anything, vinyl tubing included, that is why I fear running it to the tank is too much trouble. I can easily get a long 25ft roll of tubing & do like you said, once a week stretch it out to the tub.

Do you have trim moulding at your floor or ceilings. If so you can remove it and cut a groove on the table saw to fit the tubing in.

Humm, what a good thought, no trim up top & thin trim on the base, I would have to cross a hall or back track it around somehow, I'd have to look at that closer. I sure wish I had access to a water line close to the tank, make this easier. Maybe I can find some stainless braided rubber lined like 3/8" toilet line & run the vinyl through it but I'd need about 40ft of it lol.

The honey do list is infinate and self recyling anyways, whats one more thing do get done before you go. I'm off to tear the plumbing apart to find the 10K $ diamond, that means the plumbing will break, the sink will have to be replaced along with the base, then the walls and floor will have to be redone its a never ending cycle.:lol:
