can sps attach to rock without using any glues? how long will it take and how does it happen if it can?

Yes, it can. It "encrusts." Takes much longer than super glue gel though. It's important that it's not where the frag can be blown off by current or moved by snails or other tank inhabitants. As for how long, that will depend a lot on each individual tank; lighting, water parameters, flow and such, will all have an impact on how fast corals encrust and grow. It also varies greatly from species to species.

It also depends on the coral species. A slow growing tort may take as long as a few months whereas a quick growing stylophora may encrust as quickly as a few weeks. I highly recommend mounting your corals with either epoxy or superglue gel. Otherwise thay may be lost inside your rock work when you come home at the end of the day.
