Well you just get one thing stable and then something else goes haywire... literally...

So I'm on my way home from work excited because we are going away for the weekend for the first time this summer.... Scott calls and tells me my hex tank is reading 90.2 degrees. THis is the one that is stable, not the other one that had the heating problem. Well, he took out the heater and it had malfunctioned. Bummer.... the fish are all still swimming but my huge leather that was the main piece in the tank doesn't look so hot... With a temp that high what should I expect?? Is everything in there going to be dead when we return??? What about the live rock???

As if that wasn't enough, my son calls me this morning at work and tells me some fish freaked out in my downstairs tank and beat up my very tame copperband. Everyone has been coexisting just fine for several months now. I could feed the copperband out of my hand. The kids and the sitter got him into a large net to keep him off the powerhead intake... but he died...

Is it a full moon or what?

 :( :(

Wow :(
It is a bad day!!! How's the temp doin now! Keep us updated on it's progress. Did you put some fans to work? How 'bout the ice bottles in the sump trick to help cool it down a bit?

Jess,
You only lost one fish. If your water quality is that good you will be able to do this again. Sounds like you were lucky. The temp change sometimes makes corals spawn. Do you have Softies.shrooms, Zoos? I wish you Good Luck Colleen.

Scott dumped ice cubes in the sump as it was very low on water. He put a box fan in front of it ... by the time I got home it was 87 then a few hours later it was down to 80.... nothing like stable temps... haha

It has mushrooms and softies, and a torch....

Colleen,

Sorry about your copperband :(

90's pushing it but it may turn out just fine; got my fingers crossed!

Jess,
I will bet you a pop that one of them or two spawn..Watch them and see what happens. I have heard of this time and time again. I am curious to see if this is a Myth or Fact. Can you let us know please?

wishing you propegating Collen,
Ed

I had a temp spike during the "hot weekend". I think it went around 88 or so. I've kept the temp down lately and stable around 76-78. The fish are fine. It's been almost 2 weeks and I haven't seen any difference in their health. I had only sps at the time and the corals are doing fine. I think it stressed out the one, but it's on the rebound. Good luck with the hex. I hope everything perks back up! Sorry about the copperband. They are such interesting and awesome fish. Again Good luck.

Bad news Colleen, that copperband looked real halthy to. You might get lucky of the temp, just keep your fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear of the losses jesshimom :(, I've been there too many times. Not to hijack the thread but this year I bought a chiller and controller after going through too many yoyo temp cycles each summer.
Good luck...

Hang in there Colleen. How are those corals from me? I hope they made it fine.

Copperbands are delicate fish to begin with, so I am not surprised to see one go at 90 degrees. I am sorry for the loss.

I will recommend getting Ebo-Jager heaters, professionally made in Germany, and very nice heaters. I run Ebo-Jagers, and have had no problems with it.

While these events are sad, I feel that you should not give yourself burden because it truly was not your fault. What brand of heater was it?

I can't wait to see your tanks later this month :)
