A generator is your friend, even a 12 volt battery and inverter will run a small pump and heater for a while..........covering your tank with a sleeping bag or quilt helps keep the heat in.

I've got both a whole house 6500 watt generator and a small quiet 2000 watt honda generater for tank only use or camping.

I consider it a free generator instead of losing my whole 500 liter reef.

Sorry to hear this Mark, hopefully whats left will thrive and in time you can start adding some new family members to your tank.

damnit! i hate reading this... Im sorry... hope you dont loose the faith..

any chance of a generator in the future.?

Fish rarely die because of temperature. More likely a lack of oxygen. The cheapest insurance you can buy is a battery-operated air pump (connected to an airstone). Over here we can get them that plug into an outlet, and turn on when the power goes off. I assume there are 220-volt versions available as well.

Sucks man, really sucks. I have a friend who lost 2 tanks due to a wind storm power outage and he was down for quite a while. This must really hurt.

I had the same thing happen this week with my business. Lost thousands in livestock. Not sure if I'll continue or not. I know of some other people that have had it happen this week too. It's like there's bad reef keeping energy going around right now. It's horrible when it happens.

Been there too. 2 winters ago we had no power for 3 days because of the windstorm. We only had a snowflake moray in the 100gal tank at the time and he survived. We put 3 blankets around the tank for the entire duration. Now that we have a reef tank, we purchased this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3693 and tried it out when we lost power for 3 hours last week. It is loud and crappy. Definitely get a battery operated pump as oxygen is a bigger factor over temperature, just don't get this one!

+1 on that post kirkland...I was thinking about buying that.

p.s. If you have a Costco membership, get the generator there! They're half the price of a Honda dealer. I looked today and they have a 7,000 watt one (Honda) for just over $1,000.

Thanks for the Costco plug... but he is in the UK, and I don't know that we have the same there as in the states.

True regrets on your loss.... best of luck on recovering. D

Sorry for your loss, power outages is one of those things that we can not control. I run one of my Korillia power heads thru a APC computer battery back up device. It will run it for 5-6 hours, it is the best $200 I ever spent. I have a main generator for long-term but the APC takes care of things when I am not home or the middle of the night outages. The one I use is an APC 1500. If the power goes out the power head will start back up on it's own in about 10 seconds. When it the power comes back on everything goes back to normal operation. This gives you about a 5-6 hour window of keeping at least some circulation going in your little piece of the ocean.

Hi all after yesterday i have put it behind me and thinking for the future my corals look a lot better today the only one that looks a bit bad is my glove coral i think that what it is but every thing else is cool. going to get a couple of fish this weekend i think. and i am looking for a small generator so i can run a heater and apower head and may be my skimmer. Oh and thanks guys for your replys it was the worst day since i started and hopefully the last:).

Hi just an update on the bad day i had my corals strangely enough have and are looking 10 times better than they were before the outage cannot understand why but loads betters.
I have my tank on the home insurance but not for the live stock that is in it they told me i could not put them on and i think if could i think it would cost me big time its a shame but looking on the bright side going to the fish shop in the morning to see what they have i might get a discount if i tell him what has happened. :)
