I have never tried the bare bottom but I went to a buddies house and he has nice coraline growing on the bare bottom and it looks killer!!! Rite now I have a 3.5 inch reef sand mixed with crush coral!!! But in the next build I will be doin the bare bottom!!! Anyways it's always what u like if it's more of a natural look then reef sand would be the one if it's more of a nice setup deal I would go with the bare bottom just because wen ur coraline grows in it will look bad@$$!!! Hope that helps u with ur decission!!!!

I don't want anything not bare bottom. You have to weight out your options. Bare bottom tanks, you will be limited on what critters and fish you can keep as some require sand. Going bare bottom though, you can have all the flow you want and not have to worry about a sand storm, worry about waste being trapped in the sand that would require vacuuming etc. just to name a few. All a personal preference. :)

As mentioned above it comes down to a personal choice. Either a sand substraight or a BB both come with pros and cons. The best way to go about it is to research what the pros and cons are with both systems and decide which is best for you. YOu also have to remember the main reason you are setting up a reef tank is for personal pleasure, so make sure its what you want it to be and what you want to look at.
