I didnt. I just drilled in a few inches into each rock and the hammered the rod in. I does depend on the situation though, if you are trying to create some big overhang you might. If you look at the second picture down, you can see the bottom is cut flat, I just did the with a chop say and then glued it to the floor of the tank to.

Take a look at Epo-putty (sp?) for bonding rockwork together..... instead or in addition to acrylic rod.
