Hello everyone,

I just saw a picture of someone who had their overflow filled with (what I assume are) bio balls. the overflow still flowed down to a sump.

Now on to my question, is this something that is worth doing? also what would be the pro's and con's of adding this additional biological filtration to my tank?

thanks!

If you kept them clean it would be fine, but yes would lead to spike in nitrates if you didn't, so most people don't recommend it

Pros: great addition to bio-filtration
Cons: they need to be cleaned out as part of your maintenance. Dirty balls are bad. No one likes dirty balls. You need to take them out regularly and swish them around in some clean water to get the crud off your balls. Keep your balls clean and be kind to them and your balls will be kind to you.
