How many are needed for a 55 gallon live rock tank? Do they coexist with red leg hermit crabs? I was looking at saltwaterfish.com and their reef packages. They also sell them in a group of 50. Are 50 hermit crabs too much for a 55 gallon tank? I have about a third of my tank with live rock. And a sand bed that occasionaly turns brown.

1 blue hippo tang
1 yellow tang
1 tomato clown
1 purple queen anhtia I think
1 convict blenny
1 sand sifting star
1 black brittle star
1 choco chip star
1 green serpent star
4 peppermint shrimp
a couple of snails and assorted hermits.

all running with just a rio 1100 and a cpr bak pak skimmer

I have found blue leg hermit crabs to be very aggressive and will kill snails and other hermit species. I switched to scarlet hermit crabs and have been able to keep snails again. Also keep some empty shells in the tank so as they grow they also leave other hermits or snails alone. The drawback is they cost 2 to 3 times as much. I personally use more snails than hermits and have 25 in my 54 corner give or take a few casualties. I have a very clean algea free tank.

dude, there so much fun to watch,

ive seen a few be angry at times... but its funner to watch..

I beleave they will bully the red hermits (for shells or food)

i think they rock....

id say 10 maybe... with a bag or 2 of shells.

Scarlet hermits are the way to go IMO blues work but are indeed agressive, my scarlets clean the sand and rockwork a lot better than the blue legs
