Steve, i may want to go ahead and try the formalin dips..i am going to try to get some pics when it will let me..some of the spots are smaller, bot then there are a few that haven't changed and still look bad..i will still try to get some pics

i am working on the pics still..i lucked out where the fish was hiding last time..they are still in the same tank.

You need to proceed with the formalin dips but I would go ahead and raise the salinity up a bit first. I don't really like low salinity formalin dips if there's a choice. Bring the salinity upto 19-22 ppt over the next 4-5 days. Once done proceed with the formalin baths.

Treat at a rate of 20 drops per gallon in a seperate dip container. Use newly prepared SW, not from the QT. Be very sure temp does not exceed 78°, you use an airstone before and during treatment and the fish is not added until the cloudiness of teh water clears. Formalin will destroy bacteria and consume a good amount of O2. Please also ensure this is done outdoors or in a well ventilated space and you wear protective eye wear and gloves. Have a second dip container (rinse) to place the fish in before returning to the QT. Repeat 2 more times in 3 day intervals.

Please post back as soon as the first dip is done with anything you notice.

Cheers
Steve

Steve, i haven't been able to raise the salinity quite yet...to say the least, i made a dumb error a few weeks ago and possibly re-infected the tank..i have about 2 weeks to go and i can raise it..4 weeks have passed..the sores are still there and the smaller white bumps have returned..i think some are trophonts, not sure though..i am going to give it 2 more weeks and start raising the salinity...i will then try the formalin dips..

Steve, the small hippo is covered in bumps..some of them could be trophonts or some infection..the yellowbelly looks bad as well.. i don't know.. they were looking so well before..i wonder if a large tank would help them

i put a possibly contaminated fish in the hospital tank..i know this is a no, no,but i had no choice at the time..it may or may not have had ich, but it did have a white bump on it, so i would say that there is a good chance it did..i knew whn i did it that it wasn't the smartest of choices, but i figured the fish were already in hypo and i could just leave them a bit longer..all thhis happened while you were away... please don't scold me:oops: i knew better, but at the time i didn't have a choice

Placing them in another tank will just potentially contaminate that tank as well. The fish need to stay where they can be properly treated especially if the formalin treatment will be done soon.

Are the area the same or wrose than they where in this picture?

Cheers
Steve

the bigger, dark sores look a little better..they are not as big or dark, but one or two dark ones remain..Kimmy had to help me corner the fish with a net last time to get the good pics..when she gets back here in a little while, i will try to get good pics of both of the fish

No need to get me another pic, it will just stress the fish more. As long as we can use the old pics as a viable reference there's no need. If smaller and less dense, the marked areas are at least being "managed" although not eliminated. I would not view them as an immediate threat as yet but definately an ongoing source of stress.

Although I don't really prefer hyposaline formalin dips, I would like to see this gone once and for all. Do you have the formalin?

Cheers

Steve,i got the Formalin..the fish have more of the spots on them:eek: ..i do not belive any are trophonts..they have been there for days and aren't dropping off...i don't think that i reinfected the tank..just to be sure, i really need 2 more weeks of hypo..do you think i should go ahead with the formalin dips????if so, do you have any tips besides what is on Petsforum.com????? i was reading the label on this stuff(formalin)...it causes cancer:eek: ..i am going to use a couple pairs of gloves and long sleeves while handling it;)

Where eye goggles, gloves and a protective mask. All cheaply atainable from the hardware store. Use only in a well ventilated room or outdoors.

Prepare two containers. One for the dip and one as a rinse. Using a third (plastic) container with holes drilled in to easily transfer the fish will help. Have that container in place before adding the fish for easy removal/transfer. The rinse should be newly made SW at the same parameters as the QT and the dip. Both should be maintained at the same temp but be very sure that stays near 78° and no higher than 80°. Formalin consumes O2 very quickly and will become toxic so temp needs to remain lower. Aerate the dip ½hr before and throughout the process while the fish is in the dip. Add the Formalin at a rate of 20 drops per gallon and wait until the cloudiness clears. Do a final check on temp and pH. Add the fish and place something permiable over to prevent jumping.

Watch the fish very carefully during the process. At any time if the fish starts thrashing, remove it. Playing dead would be normal though. Keep ambient room light low if possible. The entire process will last about 45 min. Every 5ish minutes or so be sure you check the activity of the fish. Try to maintain the dip for a minimum of 30 but preferably 45 min. Once the time is up, transfer the fish to the "rinse" container for a minute or two and then ease into the QT keep the light off. If all goes well, repeat in 3 days and then again three days after that.

i just bought some disposable buckets today and some safety wear...i have some fresh hypo water mixing..i am going to try the first dip tomorrow

i just performed the first dip...it lasted for 49min.....the water never did turn cloudy??????? the temp did come up to 81 degrees at the end..for some reason the heater went haywire..i removed it and the temp fell quickly back to 79-80 degrees...most of the dip was at 77 degrees..the fish seem fine..i just released them back into the tank..i will post back with any updates

i tried to get a pic of the fish, but my battery is dead..i will get a pic after the next dip...by the way, did you mean ...every 3rd day or 3 days between dips

Repeat the dip again in 3 days and then another 3 days after that.

Have you noticed any difference in the fish appearance at all?
