I'm preparing to do my first WC using water I mixed myself and I've mixed it a bit too salty. My hydrometer is reporting it at about 1.027 @ 80F

It's a 5gal bucket nearly filled. How much water should I remove and fill with RO/DI to get it back to 1.025? It's been mixing for a day or two.

Should I do it a little bit at a time? How long do I mix after adding more RO/DI before testing again?

Also, yes I know I need to get a refractometer, so i'll save someone the reply  If anyone has one they're selling cheap...

This happens to me too sometimes. I just take a little out at a time and let it mix for about 20 min before I check again.

Hydrometers can be way off. You can get a decent refractromater for $40 which is less than 1 fish. With that and some inexpensive calibration fluid you know exactly what you have before you put it in your tank. I guess you can match it up with what your tank is but you still do not know what it is for sure.

Hmmm..........

Yes, cheap plastic swing-arm hydrometers can be iffy but a good quality glass float hydrometer once accurate always accurate (in propper temp) and doesn't need to be re-calibrated like refractometers. Where they lack is the fine tuning for hypo-salinety testing purposes.

hydrometer are bad news.. i would run and get a refractometer quickly
b4 you do the change...
