yeah it comes when your tank is cycling... we all go through that:) ... horrible .
it goes away after your tank starts getting more stablished which it can take a few months.

Welcome to RF! About diatoms, they are nothing to really worry about. Everyone experinces them when setting up a new tank and will eventually subside as the tank matures and cycles:)

yeah unless you're like Krish and do the moron cycle... then that's another story :D :p.

Yea thats what i figured but my tank has been set up for approx 4 months and is cycled but still having probs

hmm i heard it can take longer than 4 months but i'm not sure.
how big is your tank?
have you been checking your water parameters?
why do you say it's cycled?

no i used tap water on my last water change I test my water regularly just the basics nitrate nitrire PH amonia and alkalinitythey have all tested good for about a mont now

Yeah, but you still may have silicates in your water which can be fueling the diatoms. You need the ro/di water to be safe IMO:)

(BTW I have no idea what silicates are people refer to in your water that fuels diatoms, I just hear it alot:p You may have to get an expert here to expand on it:) )

yeah i agree, you'll keep having them because of the water, there are some good RO/DI filters out there and i'm sure that'd help a lot dood... besides it'd make your water quality better in the long run :).
you should check out Ebay, sometimes they got some good ones for cheaper prices.
