No one knows what exactly Tech M contains (other than people at Kent). I've tried both magnesium chloride (mag flake) and magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) independently and neither one killed bryopsis. Tech M however has worked for me in 2 different systems and for many others, though.

You can just blend your own, both sulfate and chloride are available from Bulk Reef Supply. Recipe should be on their site IIRC it 2 cups sulfate and 3 cups chloride per gallon but double check that.

i just ordered algae x by tropic marin. should be here tommorow. gonna try this, i'll tell ya how it goes with the bryopsis. die bryopsis die!

I think you meant to say that Algae X is made by Fauna Marin. I know of a few that are using right now. I'll post when I find out what their results are.

As far as I know the only way to kill Bryopsis is to screw with the plants sugar cycle. I would assume that is what Ultra algae x does so if you have a fuge I'd be careful.

Yeah, I just checked the small bottle of Tech M I have and it says deionized water, Mg sulfate and Mg chloride.

Don (or anyone for that matter) , if I need Mg sulfate, can I just get a box of Epsom Salts and mix this with the Mg chloride I am getting from BulkReef? Or do I actually have to get Mg sulfate from BulkReef and then mix the two together???

You can just use epsom salt, it's the same thing.

Yes, Epsom is fine. I do not know of anyone off hand that has not been successful with Kent Tech. I have thad 3 guys do this in the last month and another is doing it right now but I have not heard back from him yet. A DIY Kent Tech should also work. I do not know of anyone off hand that has done a DIY, which will be nice to see the results. We also do not know for sure why it works but it is a combo of Sulfate, Chloride and Mg++. I can see why the Mg++ and Cl- but have no info on what sulfate is/may be doing.

tried all the normal methods to get rid of bryopsis. Help a bit but the BRY is still there.

first I removed my refugium, removed my 10 year old shallow sand bed. Took offline my Ozone and Calcium Reactor. Shortened photo to 6hrs.

results look good. 4 days into it the BRY looks stressed. So stressed that im siphoning most of it out.

My SPS and fish, clam, crew, look fine.

FWIW, I found these dosing instructions on BulkReef Supply web site:
Mixing the Solutions

These directions will make 1 gallon Magnesium solution.


Magnesium

Fill the last gallon jug 1/3 with RO/DI water. This will make shaking and dissolving the solution much easier.
Take 5 level cupfuls of "Magnesium Chloride" and 3 level cupfuls of "Magnesium Sulfate" and mix together in the clean pail or bowl.
Add 1/3 of this mixture to the gallon jug and shake vigorously.
Repeat "Step 3" with another 1/3 of the Magnesium.
Add the remaining magnesium and repeat "Step 2" until dissolved.
Fill the remainder of the jug with water, cap and label "Magnesium."

I was told by the (german?) guy/rep.
dose at night
to do no water changes
add no trace elements
no ozone
no reactor of any kind
no phosphate remover or carbon
lighting schedule to 6hrs

They recomend good skimming though.

It is recomended to get as much algae out by hand as you can including in your refugium.

So I just took out my whole refugium. I took out my sand bed because it was the probable cause for my algae problem in the first place. I had mostly sugar sand that was getting very brown and had a lot of build up over the last 10 years. I used to overfeed a lot the first 3-4 years.

You can only do the treatment so long before your water quality starts stressing your corals/ calcium, alk, trace elements...

Im one week into the treatment and it along with carefull removal of dieing algae is really making a difference. I wish I took a before picture now.
