Sea anemone ID?

Sorry. I was trying to identify the round thing. I think it is a type of sea anemone. It is very small and has clear tenticles and clear round ends on each tenticle. It has a mouth in the middle. It looks like a mexican hat! I am trying to find out if it is friend or foe.

It is about the size of a dime when closed and the size of a quarter when open.

The first pic shows it starting to open and the 2nd shows it closed.

Thanks!

Welcome to RF Lynne!! :)

About your "ID"...Really hard to tell by the pics  Here's a bump incase someone with better eyes can figure it out:)

Good luck!

Welcome to Reef Frontiers!

Unfortunately, I've never seen anything like what you're showing... so here is another "Bump" to get this up to the top of the listing again, so hopefully someone that has come across this can help you.

Look forward to reading more from you as your tank continues to progress!

More then likely it is a pest anemone and you seem to have another below it and to the left.

Definitely appears to be an anemone, though the "tentacles" look like they belong on an LPS. My best guess is that it's something that's been light starved pretty badly, hence the light/pale coloring and partial transparent appearance. I'd let it ride for a bit to see what it is, if for no other reason than curiosity.

Please keep us posted!

I've had these in my tanks before, if they are what I am thinking, then they are not an anemone but a very small long tentacle mushroom coral. (I need to find the article I have on these guys and I will try to post it in the next day or so). I believe they are harmless and like low light. They will most likely move underneath a ledge or in a cave. They keep their translucent tentacles and sometimes will even take hold in the sand or empty shells. They have been an added bonus in my tanks and have never seemed to have bothered anything. I will post the link to their ID as soon as a can locate it!

Hrmm.. doesn't look like a ball anemone.. they have little 'balls' on the end of long stalks and a small central disc. I have a couple of pink ones like that.

looks like a sticky tip anenome or a beadlet could be a solarty coral or a type of cataphyllia or euphyllia maybe i dont know is the base hard or soft is it sticky

Thanks for all the feed back!

Krystee,

Thanks for the links. I have book marked them.

I have not touched the little guy. It is very small and it has attached itself in a hole in the rock so I can't see what the base looks like. How would I know if it is sticky or not? I have been target feeding it and have never seen any thing stick to it. It does have a large mouth in the center of the disk.
After looking at the following link, I don't think it is an organge ball, at least I hope it is not...

Lynne,

Check out the LPS id page that Meche is referring to. The cup coral also looks quite similar to your pic. It's hard for me to tell from your pic but the tentacles do look sort of like it, wish I had a pic of the mouth on the ID pages. If they have no orange-color tips, then maybe.......?

Good luck!

It is almost certainly a mushroom coral from the family corallimorphidae. Probably a Corynactis or Pseudocorynactis. I have some in my tank--hitchikers on live rock they are harmless and seem to get by fine without supplemental feeding
