I have a 55 with about 70lbs of LR and 65lbs LS, only livestock is 2 clowns, 1 pacific pygmy angel, 2 crabs, 2 cleaner shrimp and a bunch of hermits little snails and 2 big ass snails, for coral I have 4 big stalks of Xenia, fire and ice zoo, star polyps, mushroom coral and big colony of hairy green mushrooms. The tank is approaching 6 months now and until yesterday I had been using 240 watts of florescent and now I have 500 watts of MH and I kept 80 watts of florescents (actinic) all of my corals seem to be fine and my hairy mushrooms look better than they have since I bought them but the fish are in hiding, my crabs have yet to show themselves and my 2 shrimp are hiding under the rock they usually live on the side of. I went from 4.3 watts of florescent to 10 MH is that to big of a jump and will the fish just adapt and come out of hiding or should I be worried about them dying ??

I wouldn't worry about them dying, Like you said I think they will eventually adapt to new conditions over time. How long ago did you make the switch to Metal Halides??

I went from 260w pc's to dual 250w MH's about a week ago and my fish hid for a few hours and then finally came out and now they love it:)

Krish,
I have been reading about your troubles with tank temp's and preparing for similar issues. I went to Radio Shack today and found a 5" fan but I wasn't sure how I would power it, I told the sales guy what my plan was and he rambled on about how the fans were only designed to cool a CPU blah blah blah, he was a Tool so I left with nothing. What exactly was that little controller thing that had Radio Shack on it in your pic and how much was it ?? The fan I was looking at was 5" and cost $25.99 it looked really close to the ones you had in your pic on the other thread. With the hood I have I nearly melted my tank yesterday because the lights were to close to the tank so for now I have the hood sitting on top of 2 4x4's, looks terrible but it works. My tank, hood and stand are not the best but they are only a stepping stone to a new 75 so I think I will buy a new hood for a 75 and use it on my 55 until I can afford the rest, so I will need to install some fans in there because a chiller is not in my fish hobby budget. Let me know what you used to power those fans

Thanks for the info

Mike

lol..The controller thing you are refering to is a Transformer for the fan(power supply)They are real easy to hook up, and if you get a big enough one, you can possible power a couple of fans w/it. Give your fish a couple of days to get let their sunburn heal, they should be out in no time.

Yeah, that heat is a serious thing! The converter I used was a ac/dc converter that they sell. It converts 110V to 12 vdc. The fans I used are similar to the radio shack ones, but from another company, but all the same I guess. I'm not sure if the radio shack ones are metal (which you'd have to be a little careful with in terms of it rusting) but all of mine are plastic. Here is the info on my converter. You don't have to get the same one for it to work for you. You will just need something that will give you 12 VDC output if using a 12 VDC fan. I have another one here I got from Radio Shack that I'm not using anymore, but with that one you can select the output voltage from like 1v up to 12V. Here's the info on the adapter I'm using now and a photo again of it:)

Radio Shack
AC Adatpor
CAT. NO. 273-1776

INPUT: 120V AC 60hz 23W

OUTPUT: 12 VDC
1000mA
