i know alot of your probley dont use canister filters i would love to run a sump but both tanks are un drilled and dont have the money to upgrade but i was wondering what the best combination of filter media to use would be i could follow my other canister filter setup but was just wondering if i could optimize

i use crushed coral media, be sure you clean regulary though, and a skimmer is definate!

I've never used a canister filter with biological filtration media in it. With salt water aquariums usually your live rock and your base is your biological filtration.
A canister filter (IMO) only creates maintenance since you have to clean it out periodically regardless whether you use it for biological filtration or mechanical filtration.
If you are mostly using it for mechanical filtration ~ here is likely the cheapest method:
