I added some new carbon to my 125 and some of my xenia died. I found out when it was to late that xenia does not like carbon. What else can I use that works just as good? Everything else in my tank is doing so good its scary.

Thats what I thought to

Yes, that is nonsense to blame carbon on the loss of xenia or anything else.

I was running Phos-zorb and puragen. Then I was reading that I still should have carbon to remove other toxins and clear the water up. So I did and all of a sudden some of my xenia started to melt. I have 4 different types of xenia but it only seemed to affect the pink pom pom . The rest of it looks great and has been healthy growing and pumping like crazy for the past 4 months. The only change I did to my tank was run carbon so I did some checking around and found that someone said xenia does not like carbon. here is one. http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10877&highlight=xenia+melting

maybe i did jump the gun about carbon maybe I had some bad stuff (used Aqua-Pure high density carbon) or it was just a act of nature. Anyway should I use carbon or should I just stick with Puragen? Thanks for the help and advice.

From the link you posted: "FWIW, carbon use will not hinder this coral in the least. Given your recent treatment, the carbon is very much needed."

Do you do water changes?

When you added the carbon, what else was done to the tank? If you did a water change, then when was the last time you did a water change?

Water change

I did a 10% change after the xenia started to melt. Now everything is doing great. I also took the carbon out.

Pictures of xenia

Here are some pictures of the xenia and some not very camera shy fish. I don't have any before pictures of the melting xenia. The hammerhead was put there after the meltdown.

Funny - I run carbon 99% of the time in my tank with both types of xenia and I have never seem them react.... Might have just been a little stress due to the change in water quality....

OkOk I jumped the Gun

I guess when I read what waterdogs said it stuck in my head that carbon is not good for xenia.Quote from waterdogs: Running carbon is known for putting down xenia, I would stop it's use.

The question I should of asked. Is carbon ok to run with purigen and will it harm xenia. I take it the answer is no.

ok I am done tap dancing :) thanks for the info and help

Just have to give my two pennies.

I have always ran carbon 24/7 in my tank and pink pom pom xenia is my plague. The stuff grows like a weed.

Xenia's are sensitive to changes in carbon use or lighting...neither of them are bad .... just radical changes in use of, can send xenia's sideways...
