Carbon Rinsing??

Seems like a messy job any which way you look at it. But at least my sinks are really clean after scrubbing all that dust off them. If I ran more carbon I think I would get a RO/DI unit. It pains me to pour those heavy 5gal containers that I just BOUGHT at the fish store over my carbon. We have so many minerals in our water that if I had decent fawcets they would be ruined in short order. A friend of mine says her husband had big filters put in so all water in their house is at least RO. Does anyone else do this?

They are probably whole house seiment and chloramine filters not ro. For whole house ro you would have to have a huge pressure tank and pump system.
If you get rid of the chlormines and floride regular tap water is fine for rinsing carbon. Just bypassing the rodi part of the rodi is fine. No sediment and no chloramine. Quick and easy.

Sue, i am glad you brought that up about the metal strainers..i just read your thread and it never even crossed my mind about the strainers..i will pass on those and just get a media bag..

Ron, yep, I'd never of thought about the metal strainers being a problem but...I saw it first hand. I now have a plastic strainer. I use some rodi water from my lfs to rinse my carbon.

well i got a media bag to rinse my carbon in...i have used 5g of RO/DI water and there is still a ton of black dust coming out..i am beginning to think that it is impossible to get it all out!!

i put loose carbon i bags. i rinse it in regular tap water. never had any problem . i do not think a rinse under tank water will absorb that much chlorine or chloramine instantly that will jeapordize my fish and reef inhabitants. my opinion, maybe i am wrong, i have to research more. jakleen

Its not going to hurt anything its just a waste to fill it with chloramines. I use a carbon cartrige from the filter guys. I just hook it to my rodi just before the the membrane and bypass the membrane and di. Let it run for an hour or so into the drain. Then its ready to go into the sump in a bag.
