It will do OK with low light but like all photo-active plants it needs some light to exist and more to thrive and do what we like to do in removing Nitrates and Phosphates from the water column. There are very small LED or low wattage Flo bulbs if space is an issue.

Its a plant... plants need light. If you planning on using it as a bio filter to remove nitrates then it needs a lot of light.
 
Heres what I did for a cheap refuge light that works really well. Go to the hardware store buy a clip on light with the reflector , remove the clip or use it. buy a spiral florecent grow light and BAM a refuge light that grows macros really well and the bulbs last along time. cheap too. Like a $8 light and a $7 bulb.....
