changing from 10000k to 14000k

I'm thinking of changing from 10000k hqi bulbs to 14000k hqi bulbs to bring out more colour in my lps and sps corals. Will this be detrimental to their well being?

I would think it would be less intense so no shock would come from it. if you went from 14k to 10 k then maybe shorten the photo period you can do that anyway to be safe. Its always better to start off with shorter periods or screen over top the tank and gradually get to full time and intensity .

are you using DE bulbs or SE/mogul bulbs? what type of color do you like? not all 14k bulbs are created equal. what are you trying to accomplish with a 14k bulb? better viewing enjoyment for you? or to help with your corals?

I have double ended bulbs. I'm trying to bring out more colour for better viewing without damaging or slowing the coral growth.

if I were you I'd probably would try the phoenix 14k DE bulb. if I had a DE setup that is the one I'd love to try.

Also heard good things about the coralvue reeflex bulbs. They will be my next bulbs unless I hear of something better.

so far I'm happy with my Reeflux 10k and 12k bulbs. I did read that some of the 10k bulbs have a pink hue to them though. Not sure if that is what Mat was referring to or not.

Also, there has been apparently some bad bulbs out there that won't fire. David @ Coralvue takes care of them. These issues are no different than XM 10k's and the yellowing of bulbs. I had 5 or 6 XM 10k bulbs have the yellowing problem and kept sending them back. That is what we get when we want an inexpensive bulb!

If you dont have actinic supplementation, or you prefer a bluer look (which generally leads to more fluorescence from the corals) then don't hesitate going with the Phoenix. I just got a 150 watt phoenix about a week ago and I dont think will ever use any other brand.... the color is AWESOME. More blue than pretty much any other 14,000k, but it isnt as violet as, say, a Radium.
