170...1 per gallon. wait...

What is your tank? Bare bottom? SPS? Softies? leathers? LPS? More details needed....also it depends on what you want to spend....is it a new tank? Are you battling something in particular?

I would suggest one critter to every 2-3 gallons as opposed to 1 a gallon...
IMO, your better off controlling algae with husbandry instead of adding a large amount of new waste producing herbivors.

The 170 is new. Been running for about 1 month 3 weeks now, has been thur it's cycle.
Temp: 78.2
salinty: 1.025
MG: 1350
CA :420
ALK: 7 I just started to buff ALK/MG and CA.
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 0
Phostphates: 0-

It has about 110 pounds of live rock.

I have one softie.

Have about 1 1/2 inches or so of live sand on bottom.

2 - 250 12k MH
4 - blue T5's

I currtly have about 20 snails in the tank, half big snails (astria (I think)) and small ones.

That is the tank. Going very slow. Going to be mix coral and fish. Obviously I don't have fish yet, that will come in 2 weeks or so, to the QT first of course.

I like skimmy idea of 1 every 3 gallons. Now the DT is 169 gallons with about 50 gallons sump, should I just go with the gallons of the DT or use the amount of both. Differnce is 74 or 56.

I am fighting some green algie. On the back walls, sand and on the LR. Looks like grass in the back end of the tank. Some of the alagie looks like small pallops, the big snails been eating them up.

Love all the responses. Just wanted to find out how many is too little or too much. I will probably plan on getting around 30 or so more unless you think I should go off the total water system vice just the display.

I do about a 20 percent WC each week with RO/DI. I also been vacuming the sand each time, I slowing removing some sand, don't like the amount I have, little less.

Have 2 MP40's. Pretty good flow. Don't have them on full blast but like 2 steps down on lagoon setting. Anyone have a better suggestion on these pumps on settings? The flow gets so good, it will push the sand aside in one area of the tank.

Have to get one or two of those, look cool.

They are very cool, Barrier reef has them in occasionally, I ordered 1 from reefcleaners and picked a second one up from BR. I like having stuff that looks different from the normal saltwater tanks I've seen so the conches, cerith snails, sea hare (though I just gave him away once the hair algae was under control) etc.

Usually with CUC's if you buy too many, usually nature sorts things out for you as you may experience a die off in numbers depending on the available food sources so I'd start small. Also remember they poop as well so they will eat some stuff and then add waste in return. Some are cool to watch though, but I've always stayed away from them and just used good flow to help clean up things. :)

I'm right there with you Krish! I have a super super tiny CUC and 110x turnover LOL.
You don't need much of a cleanup crew when the flow pulls the poop away before the fish has a chance to wipe and whisks it down to the sump. For those of us that like sand in our tanks and softies we need a bit more of a cleanup crew :)

In all seriousness though I'm going to be adding more flow to my tank soon, like we talked about akunochi.

That's good to hear. I'll need to come check out teh tank sometime. If I were to focus on a CUC for a tank with a sand bed that is exactly what I would focus on...a SAND BED CUC. Most of the waste will end up there so have many sand sifters. I like sand sifting gobys for that job too.
