Im converting my 240g cichlid tank to a FOWLR. The tank is 7 years old and had some scratches so while it was drained I buffed it out with Novus heavy and light scratch remover. I rinsed several times with clean fresh water and the tank looks pretty clean. Any suggestions on other cleaning methods that I can use to ensure there is no residue left over from the buffing? The bottles dont have an ingredient list, just that it contains abrasives- prob silica of some type.

Hey John - I'm not sure. I moved this thread to General Forum. I think there are number of members that have buffed out their tanks, and can offer advice. Hopefully, we can get some good responses.

Did you use a cloth or anything to wipe while rinsing?

One part vinegar three parts water should do it wipe it out with a cloth soaked in this mixture

i've used novus on a number of tanks so far and have only rinsed them out with tap water. the products are non-toxic, and i doubt they have much in them besides the sanding particles & water.

thanks for the advice guys, I thought it would be alright but will use the vinegar mixture just to be sure.

So how did that product work out for you? I'm the queen of scratches. I also have a large cichlid tank I'd love to convert. What did you do with all your cichlids?? I am sure I have 40 good sized Africans. I don't want to just take them to a store, but I know I'm not likely to find someone who wants that many.

Novus 3, 2, 1 after some 1500-2000 grit sandpaper (to convert deep scratched to evenly scratches surface around original scratch) works wonders I can attest this! :)

Actually the scratch remover worked great. I used 3, then 2 on the inside with a car buffer and a terrycloth head. I was pleased. It didnt remove all of the scratches but polished the surface nicely, definately an improvement over what I had. It was a good $12.00 investment. I gave a buddy first pick of the cichlids and took the rest to the LFS for credit. Mine were pretty large so not too many folks had tanks big enough to house them. I enjoyed the cichlids but will be much happier with marine fish.
