What are the benefits? I've never heard of these (I'M A ROOKIE) until I joined here.

I know others can answer this more elliquently, but essentially you can add water flow (current) to your reef without adding the extra turnover to your sump. And, there are many healthy benefits to fish and coral with high turnover rates, but alas when it comes to simulating what happens on a reef, we can only move thousands of gallons an hour instead millions as in nature.

Another benefit is you don't have to take up much space in the tank with un-sightly powerheads when everything can be hidden with pumps used externally. Also, it gives you more options for placement of flow rather than being limited to where a powerhead can only point:)
