What is this? I am new to this and I am confused!

when you want a few thousand gallon per hour flow in you tank you cant add it to the sump so you take water directly from the tank and add it back. To create random flow people use scwd's, motorized ball valves, and oceansmotions. you can also use sea swirls on a closed loop. Tons of flow advantages like where you can aim it and very little disadvantages

Or you can use it to drive your spray bar you were asking about in the other post and you don't have to worry about siphoning your tank down to the spray bar if you drive your spray bar with the sump pump, which can be got around with putting a siphon break in the line or a one way check valve, but if these plug up and fail to work when the power goes off or the return pump from the sump fails you are going to have a wet mess and a bunch of dead animals.

Closed loops are very useful and have a variety of applications as previously mentioned. I happen to use one just for my chiller on my big tank. I also am planning on adding 2 sea swirls soon and they will run closed loop as well. They are great IMO for keeping stuff like powerheads out of the tank.
