My clowns just laid eggs.

What's the easiest set up to throw together to try to raise them?

I've read several topics on several different ways to do it. I don't really want to invest a ton of money into it as they are only osc clowns, but it would be cool to try to raise some.

Thanks for the inputs.

Ryan

small 10 gal tanks not to much flow there just babies try to keep them out of filter feed lots of rotifers they hatch a few hours after dark remove from main tank to the ten gal feed rotifers will start to gain color and get bigger get them to eat mysis then sell or keep it was harder to keep rotifers going more then anything

Hey Ryan,
I have "the booK" on raising clowns (Joyce Wilkerson I think) if you want to borrow it.
If all is well, they should lay eggs again in about two weeks, and you could be all set by then for sure.

I'd love to borrow "the book" :D Then the wife can have her own little hobby. Heck, if I do any good at it, I might just have to go get some picasso's and try to get some platnium clowns out of the deal :)

Can you feed them frozen rotifiers, or do they have to be live?

Congratulations Ryan
My wife send good luck your way.
It will be time consuming no matter how you do it but if you have the time it could be well worth the effort. My setup it still in the acquiring stage. Since I have I think 4 pair laying eggs now I should give it a try. You will definitely have to have a strict schedule to follow depending on witch way you take it and from all the reading and talking to people about it. Hatching and gut loading the food you can only learn by experience and no one way is the best it’s just depended on how much time you have. The one thing I have learned for sure is a round bottom containers for the fry and the food is the easiest to keep food suspended and will also be the easiest to clean. Like the old pop bottles with rounded bottoms not the dimpled ones. One guy I was talking to uses 5 gallon water bottles with out the handles type, with the bottoms cut off and set into a piece of wood. The new bottom (top sealed off) has an air line for the bubbles to produce the water circulation needed to suspend the food. The rounded sides causes all the food to flow down to the neck where the bubbles will stir it back up into the water.

I would say its not difficult but your first batch probably wont make it but hey this website could help too, more info is always good. www.breedclownfish.com

and you will need to order brine kits to hatch your own, and also phytoplankton and then roftiers.
and good luck lol I hope one day to attempt it and just have lots of SW mixed an ready to go as you will be doing many water changes.

Sorry Ryan, I'm swamped at work...
I should be around this weekend (Alger) if you want to swing by and grab the book, else I will be in Anacortes late Sat night.
I can probably assist with some rotifer\phyto in the near future, I am setting up cultures here this week, but it will take a bit to get them going.
One of the marine scientists is giving me lab space, I do the cultures, we share the rotifers, and phyto. I'm hoping to do some brine and copes as well.

Hey ryan I have a few tanks lying around the house if you need one. I have a 26 gallon bow front, a 6 gallon eclipse, and a few others. You can have them. Just let me know.

Thanks for all the offers everyone!

If anyone local is set up for it now, you can come by and take the eggs.

Floyd, I'll be calling you up sooner than later :) Give me a shout when you're ready to move your beast.

Congrats! My perculas just started laying eggs about 6 weeks ago after being together in my tank for over 4 years. I haven't tried to raise the babies, looks like too much work for me.

I think you should do live Mysis Shrimp too!

I start going to Bellingham for my baby's Dr Appointments. Maybe it'll be a day you're free and I could snag it from you.

Sure Ryan, I can meet you wherever in B-ham, give me a shout the day before so I can bring the book to work. I'll PM my cell.
I will look into mysis, that would be way useful!

Well, evidently the eggs hatched last night according to the wife's email I just got. They are no where to be seen, and there are 5 eggs left attached to the rock. I'm guessing I will never see them in a 120 and several fish had a midnight snack. :(

Next time I'll be waiting for them. :)

Hey Ryan, did you notice which day/night they hatched out ? This is a consistant time frame for your temp. usually on night 7 or 8, when I raised some of my clowns brood way back when i would gently siphon off some of the about to hatch eggs on this last day just before lights out with airline tubing into a small container or right into a rearing tank if close by. I had much better luck just trying to raise a couple dozen babies than having all 100+ die of starvation.
