How much money can you invest into a 20 gallon tank, or 40 gallon?

Lol anywhere from $400-$500 or $1500-$2000. After purchase of tank and stand.
Depends on the equipment and livestock!

I agree, used is the way to go to save money.

Always buy used when starting this hobby. If you end up giving up (which I hope nobody will ever do), then you won't lose that much money. Once you know what you're doing, then buy new tanks since you have a clearer understanding of what you like and don't like.

Back to your question, a 40g would INITIAL cost at least $500 for the minimum. Be prepare for unexpected cost
