I have a Maroon Clown that is about 3.5 inches. He pretty much owns my 75 gallon tank.

I would like to add a Flame Angel, but was told that the stripes of the Flame are so close to the Maroon Clown's that the Maroon would constantly pick at it (possibly killing it).

Has anyone had experience with these 2 fish in a similiar size tank?

Thanks in advance.

Rob

Well, I have a maroon in my 50 gallon hex, although he probably isn't quite the bully yours sounds like. My daughter has a Clarkii that is the biggest tyrant of the planet, and the minute she got her anemone the Clarkii turned into a bigger beast and started beating the you know what out of the Coral Beauty. I didn't listen to her when she said he was being reallyyyy mean and when I checked the Coral Beauty was nearly dead. It only took a second for me to scoop it out and I put it in my hex, because I didn't have time to get the quarantine up and going. I crossed my fingers and for two days the angel was hiding and now it is eating and swimming with everyone and nobody is picking on anyone.

I guess that's a long answer to say I have a maroon and a coral beauty getting along nicely. I guess you just never always know who will like who. Sounds like life.

You should be okay, the LFS here stocks them together on a regular basis and it doesnt seem to be a problem. But then again they are being sold pretty quickly too, about every two weeks there is another order to refill the tanks

any clown can become territorial...after all they are in the damsel family...:D. if he already shows aggession, i would be concerned about abuse.

Rearranging the rockwork is good, turning the lights out before release can help, so does feeding the tank before adding a new arrival and if you have a net, leave it propped up in the tank for awhile. Sometimes the fish are so distracted by the net, they forget about each other. ;)

I've had a maroon clown that wasn't very aggressive and have known a few others that were not also, so like any fish, I think it depends somewhat on individual temperment.

Thanks guys. I am going to think real hard about if I will add the Flame Angel or not. I may end up doing it, they are such nice looking fish.

I have a White Stripe Maroon, who is the Queen of my tank, and VERY persuasive on letting everyone in it know! *smile* She is HUGE, at almost 6” long… so very much the boss! When I added my 1st RoseBTA, she instantly found her home, and now could care less what anyone else in the tank is doing… as long as she has her baby, and they stay clear of it. (See my Avatar)

The rearranging of the Aquascaping is probably your best means of helping your new addition, but I still wouldn’t be too surprised if there was some nipped fins for a few weeks, as everyone learns its territory again.

I have a mated Maroon pair with a territorial female (nips and scares the hell out of me every stinking time my hand is in the tank without food..) and added a Flame Angel about two weeks ago. The two are doing extremely well together in my 46gal often swimming right next to each other.

Yeah that would be a good idea iyaoyas, since I know you have soime corals and are planning more. They are usually "reef safe" but should be added with caution and watched closely. The one I had really liked Xenia! Thank God I had several tanks going....Just something to consider

I'm pretty sure that, for every good compatibility story out there, there's a bad one to match it. My philosophy is, as long as it's an issue of compatibility (and not predator/prey, etc), try if if you're up to it and keep in mind that you might have to rip into the tank a couple of days later to remove one of the fish. :)

Fish are like people, some are just butt-heads. I have a large tomato clown in a bulb tip in with a flame angel, no problems and the clown was there first. I have never had the flame try to taste any corals, however I have heard of it. I agree with wolfesbane, if it doesn't work out just be prepared to remove one or the other. Steve W.
