sounds like overkill to me..
I always say keep it simple.
to many thingies = to many things to go wrong..
if a guy does proper maint.. you don't need all that stufff

yeah i agree it could be a lot to manage . i was just looking at the sump portion/refugium portion is very well tho7ught out. the raceway would scrub a huge amount of nutrients then the cryptic zones etc would wipe that water completely clean. doesnt look like hes planning on using a skimmer at all.
 
would i tbe necessary to use a skimmer when you have the diversity of life, combined with strategic placement. I think what he has created here, is masterful. Yes, the work initially would probably double. But after the system is fully mature I believe that it would essentially be a self sustained system.
 
But if you look at his tank and the actual concept behind his tank, it is not a normal display tank that you and I would have. So yes if it was you or me that was planning on putting this into our livingrooms then I would agree a major over kill. But for the system that he has designed I think that it is a well thought out and methodical system.
