I have a super food aggressive copperband butterflyfish. When he's hungry he comes up to the glass where I stand and makes this loud clicking noise, almost like a snapping shrimp that pair up with gobies. It almost looks like he is clicking on the glass or even clicking his mouth together near the glass. You guys ever see this behavior from CBB's? or any other fish? is he just hungry and is trying to communicate to me to give him more food? is he angry at me because I am in his territory? is this going to cause him to mess up his mouth?

wow..can't say I've heard of this behavior from a CBB; a pink tail triggerfish yes, but not a CBB.

cool sounds like quite a few fish can do this. anyone else have a fish that makes the clicking noises?

nc2wa, does your trigger make a grunting noise or a clicking? i know triggers often make the grinding/grunting noises but the click I hear from the cbb is much different.

is this going to cause him to mess up his mouth?

very likely will be needing some orthodontic work. Hope this guy came with dental coverage:)[/QUOTE]

lol

i was worried because i could not tell whether he was clicking by himself or on the glass. my old puffer used to push against the glass too and messed up his snout pretty bad.

Some fish have odd behaviors at times and this one is not uncommon. The fish is just over excited, as he know who you are and have food usually. I use to raise Small Mouth Bass and when ever I entered the room with a green net in my hand they use to put their nose on the glass and move their caudal fins back and forth so much that boils would developed on the surface. At times it would be so violent, that the water would go right over the top of the tank and all over the floor.

With my CBBF he use to put his nose on the glass and go up and down the glass until the food hit the water.

I had an Emperor Angel a few years ago that grunted loud enough for my wife to go "What the He#! is making that racket". For him it was a territorial threat display for the benefit of his tank mates.
