Anthony,

I was wondering if you could recommend some good, large format (coffee table type), books that show coral reefs from around the world. I recall you recommending picking a niche from the reef and trying to recreate that. I am hoping to look into this a bit, but no local stores carry these types of books (imagine that), so I can't browse them to see what is inside. I have seen several online, but who knows what's in them (not me).

Thanks for any recommendations.

Veron's is a great reference... but not a "coffee table" book

What Reed is looking for here are pics of niches and biotopes to study.

I'd still recommend focussing on a species that you will feature first (a certain fish or coral) and then finding history and dive guides for that region at places like seachallengers.com (some very specific book titles there... do browse the categories).

And some of the discount coffee table books at the big bricks booksellers like B&N, Borders, etc are fab values.

Some great oldies too...

too many to name :)

but a few like:

"Reef" by Stafford-Deitsch Jeremy

Thanks. I was originally looking for groupings of corals (from dive photos) that appealed to my eye. Then I was going to focus on the corals in that grouping to develop a specied dominant tank.

Currently I am leaning heavily to acropora millipora as the dominant coral and a few other acros to fill in.

Thanks again. I'll check the links you provided.

I agree with Anthony and most of these on reefs of the world are really not what you are looking for or formatted the way you want them. The good ones are on "a reef". The master classic and the best one ever printed was

Readers Digest Book of the Great Barrier Reef by Beckett (1984, 1987). The big one 385 p. Great pics and tons of info. This was our bible 20 years ago and it was the book we recommended to aquarium reefers.

well, than that is the book for millipora :D

Boomer, thanks! I picked up the Reader's digest book you recommended. I'll see what I can find in there. Never have enough of these books to guide my coral selection & placement.
