I have a CPR backpack skimmer for my nano. The skimmer has 2 chambers and one of the chambers came with bio bale, which I removed... Would it be possible or ok to put chaeto in that compartment??? It would be a haven for pods and help export excessive nutrients... Good idea? Bad idea?

hmmm....probably not necessary IMO, I'd bet the BakPak will provide plenty of export for a nano tank all by itself...

The only reason I thought of this, is that when it was setup awhile back, I battled hair algae quite a bit... So it really isn't necessary?

The CPR BackPac's come with a MaxiJet 1200. Could I upgrade that to something more powerful and if so.. what??? Thanks!!

i dont think it would be wise to upgrade the pump because the design of the body itself will not be able to handle the volume of water passing thru it, thus making it in-efficient.

Sometimes, its not the water volume, but the quality of the bubbles.

if you insist of upgrading the pump then you might have bubbles escaping the chamber of the skimmer.

I dont see any problem putting chaeto on your skimmer but the problem is it might escape to your tank and get a hold on it inside the tank...

I don't think you really need to worry about it getting into your tank and causing problems, I keep mine in my display,(I'm sumpless..hehe..sounds so sad) and don't have problems. Just keep in mind, especially if you put it in the bak pak, it needs enough light to grow and you'll need to rinse it regularly in saltwater, as it is a detritus trap.

I think I will try a little bit of chaeto in the second chamber of the CPR... I don't think it could hurt... I too am sumpless :) Along the lines of lighting... the room that the little tank is in get's decent light from the windows and I will have a 130W coralife PC over the tank so it should be fine... Interesting find here though... My 12g nano has Oceanic Salt, and I'm in a uphill battle against hair algae right now.... My 20g has IO salt and I haven't even seen one strand.... hmmm... makes me wonder... :)

I actually think that putting the algae in there is a good idea. Although, there is little room and you will have to find some way to provide light for it. It might help you with nitrates but I don't know exactly how much it will help because the space is so small. But good luck!
