OK so I need to treat for red bug. I have a small 3gal I can set up to save 10 or so crabs but here is my question. If I take some rock out of my sump to set up the quarentine tank, do risk some red bugs on that rock? I guess I could just not put it back in the tank. I would not want to sacrifice the crabs as it is only a 50gal system. I think I can get 5 or 8 crabs out but not all of them. I figure with the water changes etc... I can handle 6 or so dying and the nitrates. Any thoughts? I guess the same would be the case if I took mud out of the sump etc... right?

Hi....

I just completed a RB treatment in my 60 gallon. I didn't remove my crabs. I lost ALL of the small ones ( ~1/2" long) all my big hermits survived. Don't know how large your crabs are but just a heads up.

I beleive 1 tablet will treat a 320-360g system. So just divide it into what your total water volume is. I tend to OD my tank the last couple times I did it just to make sure. I did only one treatment and turned off my skimmer for 24hrs and added carbon after 24hrs did'nt do a water change for 4 days and that was about 4 or 5 months ago and I have yet to see any RB. Now this is my way I treated my tank this is definatley not text book instructions so do a little research on your own and decide on how you want to approach the problem. Have a nice day.:)

What kind of crabs are you talking about? Acro Crabs are going to die but not necessarily any of the others. Most hermit crabs go into a coma and then recover a few days later. I have not overdosed and had about an 80% or better survival rate with hermit crabs. I have dosed 12 or 15 times.

lol, OMG 12 times. Most of my hermits are 3/4" to 1" plus so I guess Ill give it a shot and monitor nitrates. Do you all dip your stuff in a small amount of this stuff when you get them? I know the guys at barrier said that they do.

This is the only reason I can figure out why I am loosing color. It seems that color loss is a comon prob. with red bug. any thoughts?

Yeah as of late I treat all incoming sps corals in a small tuperware for a few hours or more letting it float in my tank.

Ditto for my treatment.......no sign of them!:)

I know they reccomend 3 treatments but I think that is just over kill IMO. I havn't seen any RB ever since the last treatment so I guess 1 strong dose and letting it sit in your tank for a few days works well for ME.

So apollo do you have RB? When did you notice the infestation? Just wondering.:D

about 4 month ago. got some springer damsels did the trick but got some more frags from a clean reliable tank but started again after that. what article did you print out to show to the vets? i was gonna live with the pests but miss the color on them

LOL A clean reliable tank? Never trust those words from anyone! I make it a habbit to treat all incoming sps now no matter how clean and pest free they claim their tanks to be. As for some literature just do a google search on RB treatment and print out the best described way what the interceptor is used for in this hobby or you can call up Alpine Veterinary in Issaquah and get a prescription from them for $8 bucks and order it online. It's much cheaper.

hey picking some here near my work. what was your treatment? turn off skimmer? lazy to search for your treatment procedures. thanks roscoe

picking up some tablets in an hour in a half, not to sure on the dosage. any input would be great

I explained what I did in post #4 on this thread. It is not text book procedure but this has worked for me so far.
