There could be a lot of reasons.

However, my guess would be that you have more than one hermit and they got into a fight over a shell. To avoid this, always have some extra shells available.

i have a ton of shells for hermits....we have so many shell shops on the beach...when i had hermits, i bought a bunch of shells, and i picked some neat ones.....anyone want any??? i am actually going back home in 2 weeks..i could grab some while i'm there...my lfs sells them for like.75cents...i can get some cool ones for like 8-10 cents

It's also possible it's a molt. the whole front end drops off, with a little wisp of the back

freaky fiddlers

I once had a small fiddler crab tank, and on e molted... I thought it was a ghost or something. lol. that could be your problem

Sk8 and Ali are absolutely correct. Even worse is to watch them abandon their shell to find another, can you say aliens.
