I've had this fish for 6+ months. After about 3 months I noticed a red round lump on his lower lip. He let the cleaner shrimp pick at it and it went away. I was guessing he ran into one of my larger bristleworms while moving sand and got stung.

About 4 weeks ago he had another but not so big. He was eating and fine.

A couple of days ago he starts swimming around the top of the tank and he stopped eating. He'd only go under rocks and what not when I had my hands in the tank. This lump fell off. I literally saw this happen. He is now missing the middle portion of his lower jaw.

Should I put him down or?

TIA!

If the fish was fed properly and properly nourished for several weeks, then it can live a couple of weeks without eating. I would not put the fish down.

I'd move the fish to a QT and treat with an antibiotic that is systemic to make sure the fish is not getting or caught a secondary infection, and to give the fish a chance to cure itself.

Two weird things (to me at least):

1) No infection seen.
2) This fish has a lot of strength because he's treading water non stop.

Marcilyn (sp) II?

Thanks Lee!

How do you "put a fish down"?

How does one "put a fish down"? I would like to know for future, just-in-case use. Thanks!
