Hi,
Since most of my chronic injuries are related to my hobby and this board has some highly educated people on it... any nurses? Thought I would ask here.

I dislocated my index finger installing a refugium and popped it back in. Since then it works normally and has strength except in the direction it dislocated-putting pressure on that causes pain. Is that something you just kind of wait on to see if it goes away? Don't want to go to the doc if I don't have to, it seems kind of whiny to say my finger hurts considering I am already on pain meds for major jaw, back and neck problems.

Other hobby related medical problems:
Lifting old salt buckets to dump out after water changes: major back problems
and right shoulder tear
Electrocution when return pump hose came off and I tried to turn the powerstrip off while being showered with tank water: Tissue damage in right hand
Breaking cover glass in hands while cleaning it or putting it somewhere to dry (Note to self: do not put sheets of glass on top shelf)
Chronic alkalinity and calcium issues in newly setup tanks: migraines and insomnia, TMJ. Ok, that's a loose connection :)

Current amount of weight my doctor says I can lift: 10 stinkin pounds.

Any of you got advice/tank injury war stories?
Kate

I would say that this hobby might be too dangerous for you except that my biggest hobbies (mountain biking, mountaineering) have left me with an equally long injury list.
I did get bit by a moray eel once, that hurt.
Sorry I can't help you out at all on the dislocation problem, I would probably hurt you more.:D

IME the finger will hurt and be stiff for a while and may even feel like its trying to go out partway again if you move it a certain way but unless you have excessive swelling its probably not a doctor thing.

Thanks, everyone. I noticed today after posting that it's working again for typing without pain so it must be better but you are right, sometimes it feels like it's going back out. Can't even tie shoelaces without that feeling.

I suppose if I didn't injure myself with aquariums I would do it some other way :) I wanted to take up surfing but my boyfriend said I am not allowed to do anything dangerous anymore. So over protective... course he does end up paying the medical bills.

Sorry to hear that Kate :doubt: That sucks! Not sure what to tell you but maybe your finger needs to be checked out to see if it needs to be in a splinter to hold it in place to cure. I think you need to get one of those 3 gallon nano's:p Kidding...You'll be alright. Crap happens to us all. Get better soon:)

ouch Kate :( ... be more careful with what you're doing.

hmm does getting bite by a racoon counts :p.
yeah i was trying to touch a baby racoon and momy racoon came out and bite the heck out of my finger... it took forever for her to let go off my finger and the funny part is... i had a bounch of Asian tourists taking pictures of the racoon while i was in pain because she wouldn't let go :p.

Thats hilarious Gaby! What a brave mama racoon to defend her baby against an attacker 10times her own size.

Electrokate- From experience, in a healthy body, a finger should recover from that sort of damage/strain in less than a week. If the joint was weak for other reasons, than I have no idea, as the finger dislocation could be more of a symptom of an underlying problem, rather than the problem itself.

yeah she was brave but she could have let go off my finger hmm.... may be right away :p, instead my poor finger was stuck in her mouth for more than a minute.... and trust me, everytime i'd try to get it out she would squiz even more so i had to wait.... she was vicious about it :p .

Gabby...Has anyone ever told you that racoons are known to carry rabies? Hope you got your shot!

hmm yeah.... 1- it was the first time i saw a racoon ( we dont' have that kind of animals in Mexico :p)so i didn't know and 2- no one took me to the doctor  .
Lesson learned: never try touching baby racoons or other kind :D :p .

Gabby, I think you should get that finger checked out. Raccoons carry all kinds of diseases. We have them here in my area, neighbor puts out food for them (GRR) and trains them to come to his door and scratch on it for handouts. Thus they come and scratch my screens too, scaring my birds half to death. Darn beasts. I thought they were cute too til they started chewing up my stuff and killing my fish (I breed killifish and put them out in rubbermaid bins for the summer to fatten up on mosquito larvae). They trash the garden, destroy anything neoprene, and sit in fish food cultures and poop. Only good thing about them is since they moved in there are no tomcats anymore. They also seem to have driven out the possums.
I would avoid all baby animals here, deer will also attack if you get close to fawns and can do surprising amounts of damage (trust me, a buck kicked my butt when I was a kid).
I guess I need to go to the doctor too, the finger hasn't recovered much at all. I can type but that's about it.
I also have an electric problem somewhere in my fishroom and get zapped if I go in there barefoot and touch a tank or stand. This hobby is dangerous! As a result of the zapping I figured out that the most comfortable shoes you can buy are 99 cent flipflops. It's like standing on a gymnast's mat all day long. I wear them all the time now if I have to stand for long periods :)

ups i guess i forgot to mention this happened to me a few years ago.
Like i said i never got a shot for it and since i didn't know i just let it go :p .
I can't believe racoons are this mean but then again, that was the only time i got to deal with one.
Kate, if i was you i'd definetly go to the doctor to get checked just to make sure you're fine :) .
